# Auction House Plugin Setup: Listings, Taxes, Economy

ChestShop needs a location. A player-to-player auction house needs neither a location nor both parties online at the same time.

## Setting Up an Auction House Plugin

_No physical shop, no scheduling coordination between buyer and seller. Just a listing and a price._

An auction house plugin lets players list items for sale at a fixed price (or via bidding, depending on the plugin), browsable and purchasable by any other player through a GUI, without either party needing to be online simultaneously or meet at a physical location.

## Install an Auction House Plugin

This guide describes a plugin category rather than one named implementation. Pick a project with documentation for your server version. The sample commands and YAML below illustrate the workflow; use your chosen project’s documented syntax instead of copying them unchanged.

If your chosen plugin uses a Vault-compatible economy, these are example integrations. They are optional unless that project lists them as dependencies:

[VaultConnect compatible economy, permission and chat plugins through a shared API.On GitHub ](https://github.com/MilkBowl/Vault)

[EssentialsXThe essential plugin suite for Paper and Spigot servers.On Modrinth ](https://modrinth.com/plugin/essentialsx)

Drop the plugin jar into `plugins/` and restart, along with Vault and a compatible economy plugin to process purchases.

## Listing an Item

```
/ah sell <price>
```

run while holding an item lists it on the auction house at the specified price, typically for a configurable duration before it expires and returns to the seller if unsold.

## Browsing the Auction House

```
/ah
```

opens a GUI listing all currently active listings, often sortable or searchable by item category. This is useful once the auction house has more than a handful of active listings.

## Collecting Earnings and Expired Items

```
/ah collect
```

(or similar, depending on plugin) retrieves currency from sold items and unsold expired items returning to their original lister. Most auction house plugins require this active collection step rather than depositing earnings automatically, so players need to be told to check back.

## Setting Listing Fees and Limits

```
listing-fee: 5.0
max-listings-per-player: 5
listing-duration-hours: 48
```

A small listing fee (deducted upfront, non-refundable even if the item doesn't sell) discourages spam-listing and low-effort flooding of the auction house with overpriced junk.

## Preventing Price Manipulation

Without any price floor or sanity checks, players can list items at absurdly low or high prices, sometimes deliberately, to manipulate a server's effective item economy. Some auction house plugins support minimum/maximum price bounds per item type; whether this is worth configuring depends on how actively a specific server's economy needs protecting from manipulation.

## Auction House vs. ChestShop vs. GUI Shops

These solve genuinely different problems rather than directly competing: a GUI/admin shop handles fixed-price baseline goods, ChestShop-style shops handle location-based player shops, and an auction house handles asynchronous player-to-player trading without either needing a physical presence. Many servers run some combination of all three.

## Taxing Transactions (Optional)

Some servers apply a small percentage tax on completed auction house sales, functioning as a currency sink that helps counter economy inflation over time. Whether this fits a specific server's economy design is a deliberate choice, not something every auction house setup needs by default.

## Marketplace reliability

Test listing an item, purchasing it with a second account, cancelling the listing, and claiming expired items. Check how the plugin handles a full inventory and a server restart. Decide whether listing fees, maximum prices and item blacklists are appropriate for your economy, then publish these rules to players.

## Troubleshooting: Listed items disappear or never return

Check how the plugin handles expiration, player mailbox storage, and items that cannot fit into inventory. Look for database or serialization errors during a test listing and after a server restart.

### How to verify the fix

Use a low-value test item and accounts you control. Verify cancellation, purchase, expiry and recovery before launching an economy-wide auction system.

## Investigate a disputed purchase without losing the trail

Start with the listing, item, buyer, seller and transaction time. Compare the item transfer with the currency transfer before granting a replacement. A player may have bought the item, left it in a collection menu or failed to receive it because delivery was delayed. Preserve logs and test the same route with a cheap item on staging. Keep the investigation separate from changes to fees or limits so staff can reproduce the original conditions.

Publish how expired and cancelled listings are collected. Decide whether refunds come from a supported administrative operation or a documented manual process. Test that process once before an incident requires it. Review item blacklists and metadata handling when adding custom items; an apparently ordinary item can carry an effect that changes its trading value. Keep the recovery notes beside the economy configuration, and record corrections to avoid paying the same claim twice.

### Troubleshooting paths

- Disputed item: compare delivery, collection and transaction records.
- Disputed balance: check the economy provider before adding currency.
- Repeated claim: review previous recovery actions and listing identity.

## Test the listing lifecycle before launch

Have one test player list an item and another purchase it. Check that the seller receives the correct proceeds, the buyer receives exactly one item, and tax or fees match your advertised rules. Then test expired listings, cancelled listings, full inventories and a restart midway through a listing. If the plugin uses a database, include that data in backups.

An auction interface can be configured correctly while its economy is not. Compare auction prices with server shops and item-generation systems before launch.
