## Bots for Minecraft Servers: Test Players, NPCs and Defense

**Quick answer:** "bot" means different things on a Minecraft server. It can be a **Discord bot**, a **fake player** you spawn to test your own server, an **NPC** from a plugin like Citizens, or a **hostile bot** that spams your server with joins. This guide separates them, shows the legitimate uses, and points to the defenses.

_Only run bots against servers you own or have permission to test. Attacking other servers with bots is abuse and can get you banned or prosecuted._

## Fake players for testing your own server

Server owners sometimes want extra "players" online to test chunk loading, mob farms, redstone or TPS under load. Options:

- **Carpet mod on Fabric servers.** Carpet adds a `/player` command that can spawn a fake player and have it perform actions. It is a Fabric mod, so it fits modded or Fabric servers. See [How to Make a Modded Minecraft Server](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-make-a-modded-minecraft-server).
- **Real test accounts.** Invite a few friends or staff to join and move around together. It is the most realistic test.
- **NPC plugins.** Citizens NPCs are not real players and do not load chunks like one, but they are useful for visuals and menus.

On Paper, check the plugin page of any fake-player plugin for supported versions and behavior before using it.

## Test performance properly

1. Do it on a staging copy first. See [Staging Environment Guide](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-staging-environment-guide).
2. Capture a [spark](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-read-spark-profiler-minecraft) profile before and during the test.
3. Add players in steps, and watch TPS and MSPT. See [TPS vs Ping vs FPS](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-tps-vs-ping-vs-fps).
4. Test the activities that stress the server, such as exploring, mob farms and redstone.
5. Record what changed and what broke.

For lag fixes see [Fix Minecraft Server Lag](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/reduce-minecraft-server-lag).

## Bots that join and spam your server

Join-spam bots flood your server with fake connections, chat spam or advertising. Typical signs: sudden player count spikes, many similar usernames, chat full of links, and high CPU on login.

| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

| Connection throttling | Limits how fast one IP can reconnect |

| Firewall | Allow only needed ports. See [Firewall Hardening](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-firewall-hardening) |
| Host DDoS protection | Ask your host what is included. See [Best Minecraft Server Hosting](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/best-minecraft-server-hosting-2026) |

Read the full checklist in [Join Spam and Bot Attacks](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-antibot-join-spam-defense).

## Hostile bots vs cheaters

Bots are different from cheaters. Anti-cheat plugins detect cheating clients, while anti-bot tools handle mass connections. See [Best Anti-Cheat Plugins](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-anticheat-plugins-compared) and [Dealing With Cheaters](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-cheaters).

## Add a Discord bot to your Minecraft community

If you want a bot for your Discord, not for the game, see [Top Discord Bots for Minecraft Communities](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/top-discord-bots-minecraft-communities). Keep tokens private, give the bot minimal permissions and review its access. For moderation cases, see the ZCraft [Evidence Bot](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/products/evidence-bot-discord-case-evidence).

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I add a bot to a Minecraft server?** It depends on what you mean. For a Discord bot, see the guide above. For fake players on Fabric, use the Carpet mod. For NPCs, use Citizens.

**Can I spawn fake players on Paper?** Check plugin pages for supported versions. The Carpet mod's `/player` command is for Fabric.

**How do I stop bots from joining my server?** Use a whitelist, online-mode, a login plugin, connection throttling, a proxy and host protection.

**Are bots allowed on other servers?** No, many servers ban them. Only test on your own server.
