# Setting Up ChestShop for Player-to-Player Shops

ZCraft StudiosOct 3, 2026Updated Oct 20, 2026

A sign and a chest is the entire interface. ChestShop turns any chest into a buy/sell shop without a GUI or separate shop command.

## Setting Up ChestShop for Player-to-Player Shops

_No GUI, no shop command. Just a sign on a chest, and the chest itself holds the inventory._

ChestShop lets any player create a functioning shop using nothing but a chest and a sign. No admin setup is required per shop, which makes it a common choice for player-driven economies.

## Install ChestShop

[ChestShopThe original physical shops Bukkit plugin using just signs and chests. Simple, yet very powerful with lots of addons!On Modrinth ](https://modrinth.com/plugin/chestshop)

[VaultConnect compatible economy, permission and chat plugins through a shared API.On GitHub ](https://github.com/MilkBowl/Vault)

[EssentialsXThe essential plugin suite for Paper and Spigot servers.On Modrinth ](https://modrinth.com/plugin/essentialsx)

Download ChestShop from the project linked above. Check the supported Minecraft version, server platform, Java requirement and dependencies for the selected release.

1. Back up the server files and any plugin database.
2. Stop the server before changing JAR files. Put the compatible plugin build and its required dependencies in the correct plugin folder.
3. Start the server and read the startup log. Resolve missing dependencies or version errors before editing the generated configuration.
4. Stop the server, make one small configuration change, then restart and test it with a non-operator account.

Install a compatible economy provider and Vault before testing a purchase. Use two ordinary player accounts so a permission bypass does not hide a broken shop.

## Creating a Shop Sign

Place a sign on or near a chest, formatted as:

```
Line 1: (shop owner's name; auto-fills if left blank)
Line 2: quantity (e.g. 64)
Line 3: price:price (buy:sell, e.g. 10:5)
Line 4: item name (e.g. Diamond)
```

Left-clicking the sign after placing it links it to the adjacent chest, converting it into a working shop.

## How Buying and Selling Works

- **Left-click the sign** to buy the listed quantity at the buy price (stock comes out of the linked chest).
- **Right-click the sign** to sell that quantity to the shop at the sell price (items go into the chest, and the shop owner's balance pays out).

If either buy or sell price is left blank (just a colon with nothing on one side), that direction is disabled, so a shop can be buy-only, sell-only, or both.

## Restocking a Shop

The shop owner simply needs to keep the linked chest stocked. ChestShop pulls inventory directly from the chest's actual contents; there's no separate virtual stock to manage.

## Protecting Shop Chests

ChestShop shops are still physical chests, which means they benefit from (and generally should be set up alongside) a land protection plugin like GriefPrevention or WorldGuard. Otherwise a shop's chest is just as vulnerable to theft as any unprotected chest, despite functioning as a shop.

## Admin Shops

For staff-run shops with effectively unlimited stock (not tied to a real chest running out), a large or double chest combined with an admin periodically restocking it is the simplest approach. ChestShop doesn't have a dedicated "infinite stock" mode built in, so this is typically handled through chest management rather than a special config flag.

## Common Setup Issues

- **No economy plugin detected:** ChestShop depends entirely on Vault finding a registered economy; confirm `/vault-info` shows an economy provider before troubleshooting ChestShop specifically.
- **Sign not linking to the chest:** the chest needs to be directly adjacent (not diagonal) to the sign for the link to register correctly.
- **Permission issues:** ChestShop has its own permission nodes for who can create shops at all, worth checking if players report being unable to create one despite correct sign formatting.

## Design a safe test shop

Before enabling player shops server-wide, make a small test area with one seller, one buyer, and a test economy balance. Confirm that items move correctly, money changes hands, and the shop respects nearby land protection.

### Test cases that catch common problems

1. Buy one item with sufficient funds.
2. Try buying when the shop is empty.
3. Try buying with insufficient funds.
4. Attempt an unauthorized change to someone else's shop.
5. Verify transactions after a normal server restart.
6. Check what happens if the shop chest is destroyed or moved.

Document any taxes, prohibited items, and policies on abandoned shops before launch. Make it obvious who is responsible for reversing a mistaken transaction.

## An operational test worth running

Test buying and selling as two separate non-OP accounts, including an empty chest, a full inventory, an invalid sign and a protected claim. Compare amounts deducted from the buyer with amounts earned by the seller, and verify the chest stock changes only once. Pay special attention to transaction taxes and shop signs after a plugin update.
