# Adding Custom Crafting Recipes With a Datapack

Add custom crafting recipes to your Minecraft server with a datapack: file layout, recipe JSON, testing and common mistakes to avoid.

## Adding Custom Crafting Recipes With a Datapack

_Custom recipes don't need a plugin at all. Vanilla Minecraft has supported them natively, via datapacks, for years._

A datapack is a folder of JSON files that modifies vanilla game behavior (including crafting recipes) without any plugin or mod required. For simple custom recipes, this is often simpler than reaching for a dedicated plugin.

## Datapack Folder Structure

```
world/datapacks/my_recipes/
├── pack.mcmeta
└── data/
    └── my_recipes/
        └── recipe/
            └── custom_sword.json
```

`pack.mcmeta` declares the pack format (must match the server's Minecraft version) and a description:

```
{
  "pack": {
    "pack_format": 48,
    "description": "Custom crafting recipes"
  }
}
```

## Writing a Basic Shaped Recipe

```
{
  "type": "minecraft:crafting_shaped",
  "pattern": [
    " D ",
    " D ",
    " S "
  ],
  "key": {
    "D": { "item": "minecraft:diamond" },
    "S": { "item": "minecraft:stick" }
  },
  "result": {
    "item": "minecraft:diamond_sword",
    "count": 1
  }
}
```

This is functionally the vanilla diamond sword recipe, written explicitly. The actual customization comes from changing the pattern, key items, or result.

## Creating a Recipe for a Custom Result

Vanilla datapacks can't create entirely new items, but they can produce vanilla items with custom NBT data (a renamed item, custom lore, or specific enchantments pre-applied) as the recipe's output. True custom items with unique textures need a resource pack alongside the datapack, or a plugin-based item system for anything more complex.

## Loading the Datapack

Place the folder in `world/datapacks/`, then from in-game or console:

```
/reload
```

or restart the server. Confirm it loaded:

```
/datapack list
```

## Removing a Vanilla Recipe

Datapacks can also disable existing vanilla recipes by overriding them with an empty or modified version at the same path (`data/minecraft/recipe/<recipe_name>.json`). That's useful for removing a recipe that doesn't fit a server's intended progression or economy.

## When a Plugin Makes More Sense

Datapacks cover custom crafting, loot tables, and several other vanilla systems entirely without a plugin, but they're limited to what vanilla's data-driven systems actually support. Fully custom items with unique behavior, GUIs, or mechanics beyond crafting/loot generally need a proper plugin instead, since datapacks can't add new code logic, only configure existing vanilla systems differently.

## A Practical Note

`pack_format` numbers change between Minecraft versions, and a mismatched format shows a warning (or fails to load, depending on version). Always check the correct format number for the server's specific Minecraft version before assuming a datapack written for a different version will work unmodified.

## Test recipes from a clean world copy

A custom recipe should work with the expected item inputs and reject the wrong ingredients. Test it on a separate world with the intended Minecraft version, because datapack paths and JSON formats may change between versions.

Check that the datapack is enabled and that the server logs do not show data-pack parsing errors. Use one known valid craft and at least two invalid combinations. Restart and check whether the recipe persists. If the recipe produces an item requiring a resource pack, verify that a fresh client receives the textures correctly.

### Keep recipes maintainable

Store each recipe in a clearly named file, record the Minecraft version it targets and document any custom item identifiers. Avoid copying recipe JSON from an older release without consulting the [Minecraft data pack reference](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Data%5Fpack).

## An operational test worth running

After installing the datapack, verify it is enabled with the command supported by your Minecraft version, then craft every recipe using a normal player account. Watch for recipe collisions with vanilla content or other datapacks. Back up the datapack and test world reload behavior before publishing a recipe as available.
