# EssentialsX Permissions: Nodes, LuckPerms Setup and Examples

## EssentialsX Permissions: Nodes, LuckPerms Setup and Examples

**Quick answer:** EssentialsX has no built-in rank system. It checks permission nodes such as `essentials.home` and `essentials.tpa`, and you grant those nodes to groups with a permissions plugin like LuckPerms. Give players only the nodes they need, avoid the `essentials.*` wildcard for normal groups, and test with a non-operator account.

## How EssentialsX permissions work

1. Install a permissions plugin. See the [LuckPerms Setup Guide](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/luckperms-ranks-setup-guide).
2. Create groups such as `default`, `vip` and `moderator`.
3. Add the `essentials.*` nodes each group needs.
4. Test with a normal account. Operators bypass most checks, which hides mistakes.

## Cooldowns, delays and bypass

Teleport delays and cooldowns are configured in EssentialsX's `config.yml`. Bypass nodes exist for staff or ranks, so check the docs for the node that matches your option. Do not give bypass to normal players unless you intend to.

## Find the missing permission

When a command fails:

1. Run `/lp verbose on`, then the command, then `/lp verbose off`, and read the node that was checked.
2. Confirm with `/lp user <name> permission check <node>`.
3. Check whether a more specific negative node overrides a wildcard.
4. Check the server context in LuckPerms.

## Avoid the wildcard

`essentials.*` gives access to everything, including powerful admin commands. Use it only for owners, and prefer explicit nodes. Wildcards also make it hard to see what a group can really do.

## Troubleshooting

## Frequently asked questions

**Does EssentialsX need LuckPerms?** It needs a permissions plugin, and LuckPerms is the common choice.

**How do I give players more homes?** Define counts in `sethome-multiple` in `config.yml`, then give the matching `essentials.sethome.multiple.<name>` node.

**Why can operators use everything?** Operators bypass most permission checks. Test with a normal account.

**What is the best EssentialsX permissions setup?** Start with a minimal member group and add nodes as players ask for features.
