# Setting Up GriefPrevention for Player Land Claims

ZCraft StudiosOct 3, 2026Updated Oct 20, 2026

WorldGuard regions are admin-defined. GriefPrevention lets players claim and protect their own land without staff setting up a region for each one.

## Setting Up GriefPrevention for Player Land Claims

_A region a player claims themselves, instead of one staff has to manually draw for them._

GriefPrevention is built specifically for survival servers where players protect their own base without needing an admin to run WorldGuard commands for them. Players earn claim blocks over time (or receive them another way) and use them to mark out protected territory.

## Install GriefPrevention

[GriefPreventionThe self-service anti-griefing Bukkit plugin for Minecraft servers since 2011.On Modrinth ](https://modrinth.com/plugin/griefprevention)

Download GriefPrevention from the project linked above. Check the supported Minecraft version, server platform, Java requirement and dependencies for the selected release.

1. Back up the server files and any plugin database.
2. Stop the server before changing JAR files. Put the compatible plugin build and its required dependencies in the correct plugin folder.
3. Start the server and read the startup log. Resolve missing dependencies or version errors before editing the generated configuration.
4. Stop the server, make one small configuration change, then restart and test it with a non-operator account.

Confirm GriefPrevention loads after a clean restart. Test the feature you need with an ordinary player account before adding optional integrations.

## How Players Create a Claim

With a golden shovel in hand (the default claim tool):

- Left-click one corner of the desired claim area
- Right-click the opposite corner

This creates a claim, consuming claim blocks equal to its area. Players earn claim blocks passively over playtime by default, configurable in the plugin's config.

## Giving Claim Blocks Manually

```
/adjustclaimblocks <player> <amount>
```

adds (or removes, with a negative amount) claim blocks for a specific player. It's useful for rewarding players or granting a starting allowance beyond the passive accrual rate.

## Checking Claim Info

```
/claiminfo
```

run while standing in a claim reports who owns it and its size. Admins can also use `/claimslist <player>` to see every claim a specific player owns across the server.

## Trusting Other Players

Claim owners manage their own trust list without needing admin involvement:

```
/trust <player>
```

grants a player build access inside the claim. `/untrust <player>` revokes it. `/trustlist` shows everyone currently trusted.

## Admin Overrides

```
/ignoreclaims
```

toggles whether an admin bypasses claim protection entirely, which helps with moderation work inside a player's claim without needing to be trusted first.

## Resolving Claim Disputes

```
/abandonclaim
```

lets a player give up their own claim, returning the claim blocks. For claims that need to be forcibly removed (an inactive or problematic player):

```
/deleteclaim
```

run by an admin while standing in the claim.

## GriefPrevention vs. WorldGuard

They solve different problems rather than competing directly. GriefPrevention is built for player-driven, survival-style land ownership, while WorldGuard is better suited to admin-defined zones (spawn, event arenas, PvP zones) with specific rule sets. Many servers run both side by side for their respective use cases.

## Claims abuse testing

Use two player accounts to create a claim, grant limited trust, place and break blocks, and try accessing containers. Test the behavior at claim edges and after a server restart. Check how abandoned claims are handled before enabling automatic removal; players need clear notice before losing protected land.

## Investigate a protection complaint without guessing

Start with the location and the accounts involved. Check whether the disputed action happened inside the claim, just beyond its boundary or in another protected region. Review the owner's trust choices, then repeat the action as a non-operator. Keep block changes, container access and entity interactions separate in your notes. A player who can open a chest may not have the same access to edit land, and staff bypass privileges can hide this distinction.

Teach players the smallest useful claim workflow: inspect ownership, define a boundary, trust a friend and remove that trust. Include a short recovery route for an accidental claim or a dispute with a neighbor. Decide how abandoned claims are handled before the first conflict. Staff should document administrative changes to someone else's land rather than silently editing trust. Keep the policy and the plugin configuration aligned, especially when earned claim blocks or rank bonuses change.

### Troubleshooting paths

- Unexpected access: review trust, boundary and bypass permissions.
- Unexpected denial: check overlapping protection and world settings.
- Claim dispute: preserve ownership details before any administrative change.

## An operational test worth running

Test with two ordinary accounts: owner, trusted visitor and untrusted visitor. Verify block breaking, containers, doors, explosions and claim subdivision according to your rules. Staff bypass can hide configuration mistakes, so an operator-only test is insufficient. Make sure claim information survives a restart.
