## How Much RAM Does a Minecraft Server Need? (2026 Guide)

**Quick answer:** a small vanilla or Paper server for a few friends often runs well on **2 to 4 GB**. A plugin server with 20 to 50 players commonly needs **4 to 8 GB**. Modpacks usually need **6 to 12 GB or more**. These are starting points, not rules. RAM does not fix a slow CPU, so measure with a profiler before buying more.

## Starting points

| Server                                              | Typical starting RAM                                 |
| --------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| Vanilla or Paper, 1 to 5 friends                    | 2 to 3 GB                                            |
| Paper with a few plugins, 10 to 20 players          | 4 GB                                                 |
| Public Paper server, 20 to 50 players, many plugins | 6 to 8 GB                                            |
| Network backend with minigames or heavy plugins | 8 GB and up, per server |
| Light Fabric mod server                             | 4 to 6 GB                                            |
| Large modpack | 6 to 12 GB or more, follow the pack's recommendation |

Treat these as a starting point to test from.

## What uses RAM

| Factor                       | Effect                                                                                                          |
| ---------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Player count | More players load more chunks and entities |
| View and simulation distance | Higher values load more. See [server.properties Explained](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-properties-explained) |
| Plugins | Some cache a lot of data |
| Mods and modpacks | Content mods add large registries |
| World size and explored area | More loaded chunks |
| Entities and farms | Mobs, items and hoppers add up. See [Virtual Spawners](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/virtual-spawners-minecraft-lag-free-spawner-farms) |
| Java overhead | The JVM needs memory beyond the heap |
| Operating system and panel | Leave room for them |

## RAM is not the same as speed

Minecraft's main thread depends on a fast CPU core. A server with plenty of RAM and a weak CPU still lags. Check which kind of lag you have in [TPS vs Ping vs FPS](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-tps-vs-ping-vs-fps) and profile with [spark](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-read-spark-profiler-minecraft). Read [Fix Minecraft Server Lag](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/reduce-minecraft-server-lag) before upgrading.

## How to set the RAM

The memory flags go before `-jar`:

```
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui
```

- `-Xms` is the starting heap and `-Xmx` is the maximum. Setting both to the same value avoids resizing.
- Do not give the server all of the machine's RAM. Leave space for the operating system.
- On a hosting panel, keep `-Xmx` below the memory limit shown for the server, because the panel counts memory outside the heap.

See [RAM and Java Errors](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-java-heap-ram-errors) for startup errors, and [Aikar's Flags Explained](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/aikars-flags-performance-tuning) and [ZGC for Minecraft Servers](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/zgc-minecraft-server-flags-guide) for garbage collector options.

## Too little and too much RAM

| Problem    | Symptom                                                         |
| ---------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Too little | OutOfMemoryError, frequent freezes, constant garbage collection |
| Too much | Longer garbage collection pauses on some setups, wasted money |

## Measure your server

1. Run the server at peak players.
2. Capture a [spark](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-read-spark-profiler-minecraft) profile and memory report.
3. Check how much heap is used after garbage collection. If it stays near the limit, add RAM. If it stays low, you may have too much.
4. Check MSPT. If it is high while memory is fine, the CPU or a plugin is the problem.
5. Change one setting and measure again.

## Reduce memory use

- Lower view and simulation distance.
- Pregenerate and limit the world. See [World Pregeneration](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-world-pregeneration-launch-guide).
- Remove plugins you do not use.
- Limit entities and hoppers.
- Use virtual spawners instead of mob farms where it fits.

## Choosing a host plan

Match RAM to your measured needs and check the CPU. See [Best Minecraft Server Hosting](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/best-minecraft-server-hosting-2026), [Cheap Minecraft Server Hosting](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/cheap-minecraft-server-hosting-guide) and [Monthly Cost Planning](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-launch-cost-planning).

## Frequently asked questions

**How much RAM does a Minecraft server need?** From 2 GB for a small server to 8 GB or more for busy plugin servers and modpacks. Measure to find your number.

**Is 4 GB enough for a Minecraft server?** For a small plugin server or a handful of friends, often yes.

**Is 8 GB too much?** Not for a busy server. For a small one, it can be wasteful.

**Does more RAM reduce lag?** Only if memory is the bottleneck. Check the CPU and plugins first.

**How much RAM does a modded server need?** Follow the modpack's recommendation, often 6 to 12 GB or more. See [How to Make a Modded Server](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-make-a-modded-minecraft-server).
