## How to Add Plugins to a Minecraft Server: Step by Step

**Quick answer:** to add a plugin, download its `.jar` file from a trusted page, stop your server, put the jar in the `plugins` folder, then start the server again. You need a plugin-capable server such as **Paper**, Spigot or Purpur. Plain vanilla, Fabric and Forge servers do not load plugins. Always restart instead of using `/reload`.

## Plugins, mods and server software

| Plugins | Mods | |
| -------------------------------- | --------------------------------- | ------------------------------- |
| Run on | Paper, Spigot, Purpur, Folia | Fabric, Forge, NeoForge |
| Players need to install anything | No | Usually yes |
| Best for | Ranks, economy, claims, minigames | New blocks, items and mechanics |
| Folder | plugins | mods |

If you are not sure what your server runs, see [Paper vs Fabric](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/paper-vs-fabric-for-minecraft-server) and [Folia vs Paper vs Purpur](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-software-paper-purpur-folia). To set up a server first, read [How to Start a Minecraft Server](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/start-minecraft-server).

## Step 1: choose a plugin and check compatibility

Before downloading, check the plugin page for:

- **Supported Minecraft versions.** The plugin must support yours. See [Update a Minecraft Server to 26.1+](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-26-1-server-update-guide).
- **Server software.** Paper and Spigot plugins usually work on Paper. Folia needs plugins that explicitly support it.
- **Dependencies**, such as Vault or PlaceholderAPI.
- **Java version.**
- **Recent updates** and active support.

For ideas, see [Best Minecraft Server Plugins by Category](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/best-minecraft-plugins-by-category).

## Step 2: download from a trusted source

Use official pages: Modrinth, Hangar (PaperMC), SpigotMC, the author's GitHub releases or the marketplace where you bought it. Avoid re-uploaded jars on random sites, since modified plugins can contain malware. Never run a jar you do not trust.

## Step 3: add the plugin to the server

1. Stop the server.
2. Open the server folder and find the `plugins` directory. It is created on first start of a plugin-capable server.
3. Copy the `.jar` into `plugins`. Do not unzip it.
4. Add any required dependency plugins the same way.
5. Start the server.

On a hosting panel, upload the jar through the file manager or SFTP into the `plugins` folder, then restart from the panel. See [First Server on a Hosting Panel](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-hosting-panel-first-server-checklist).

## Step 4: restart, do not reload

Use a full restart after adding or updating plugins. The `/reload` command and plugin managers can break plugins, leak memory and corrupt data. See [Paper Reload vs Restart](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/paper-reload-versus-restart-explained).

## Step 5: confirm it loaded

1. Read the startup console for errors.
2. Run `/plugins`. Green names loaded, and red names failed. If a plugin is red, see [Plugin Not Loading?](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-plugin-not-loading-fix).
3. Check that the plugin created its folder in `plugins/<PluginName>`.
4. Run its main command, such as `/pluginname help`.

## Step 6: configure and set permissions

1. Open the config files in the plugin's folder and change one setting at a time. See [Plugin Config Review](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-plugin-config-review-checklist).
2. Restart or use the plugin's own reload command if it has one.
3. Give players permissions through a permissions plugin. See [LuckPerms Setup Guide](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/luckperms-ranks-setup-guide).
4. Test as a normal player, not an operator.

## Common errors

| Symptom | Cause and fix |
| ---------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Plugin shows red in /plugins | Wrong Minecraft version, missing dependency or wrong server software |
| UnsupportedClassVersionError | Java is too old for the plugin. Use the Java version the plugin and Minecraft require |
| "Could not load plugin" | Corrupt jar. Download it again |
| Plugin does nothing | Missing permissions, or its config is disabled |
| Server crashes on start | Read the crash report. See [Read Minecraft Crash Reports](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-crash-report-guide) |
| Two plugins conflict | See [Find Plugin Conflicts](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-plugin-conflict-debugging) |

## Install plugins on free and managed hosts

Most hosts give you a plugin folder or an installer in the panel. Free hosts may limit plugin choices or the number of plugins. See [Free Minecraft Server Hosting](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/free-minecraft-server-hosting-guide) and [Best Minecraft Server Hosting](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/best-minecraft-server-hosting-2026).

## Update and remove plugins safely

- **Update:** back up first, replace the jar and restart. Paper can also apply jars from a `plugins/update` folder on startup. See [Update Plugins Safely](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-plugin-update-checklist).
- **Remove:** stop the server, delete the jar, and keep the data folder until you are sure you do not need it. Remove dependent plugins that no longer make sense.

## How many plugins should you add?

Only add what solves a problem. Each plugin adds update work and risk. Start with permissions, core commands, protection and logging, then add features as players ask. Profile after changes with [spark](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-read-spark-profiler-minecraft).

## Frequently asked questions

**Where do I put plugins in a Minecraft server?** In the `plugins` folder in the server directory.

**Can I add plugins to a vanilla server?** No. Switch to Paper or another plugin-capable server first.

**Can I use plugins and mods together?** Not on standard Paper. Hybrid servers exist but are often unsupported and unstable.

**Do players need to install plugins?** No, plugins run on the server only.

**Why is my plugin not working?** Check the console, version support, dependencies and permissions.

**Can I add plugins to a Realm?** No, Realms do not support plugins. See [Minecraft Server vs Realms](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-vs-realms).
