## How to Host a Minecraft Server: Home, Hosting or VPS

**Quick answer:** you can host a Minecraft server in three ways: **on your own computer** (free, but it must stay on and you need port forwarding), **with a Minecraft hosting company** (easiest, from a few dollars a month), or **on a VPS** (more control, more admin work). For most people starting out, a hosting company is the simplest way to keep a server online all day.

## Compare the three ways

| Your own PC | Hosting company | VPS | |
| ------------- | ----------------------------------- | ---------------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| Cost | Free, plus electricity | From a few dollars per month | From a few dollars per month |
| Setup | Medium | Easy, click and play | Hardest, you set up everything |
| Always online | Only while your PC is on | Yes | Yes |
| Performance | Depends on your PC and upload speed | Good, shared CPU plans | Good, you control the machine |
| Security risk | You expose your home network | The host handles it | You handle security |
| Best for | Testing and friends | Most servers | Public servers and networks |

## Option 1: host a Minecraft server on your own PC

1. Install the right Java and download Paper. See [How to Start a Minecraft Server](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/start-minecraft-server).
2. Accept the EULA and start the server.
3. Forward TCP port 25565 on your router, and allow it in your firewall. See [How to Make a Minecraft Server Public](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/make-minecraft-server-public-port-forwarding).
4. Share your public IP or a domain.

Downsides: it stops when your PC stops, a home connection may not have enough upload, CGNAT can block it, and a public home server exposes your network.

## Option 2: host with a Minecraft hosting company

1. Compare a few hosts. Check the CPU, location, backups, Java options and refund window. See [Best Minecraft Server Hosting](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/best-minecraft-server-hosting-2026) and [Cheap Minecraft Server Hosting](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/cheap-minecraft-server-hosting-guide).
2. Pick a plan with enough RAM. See [How Much RAM Does a Minecraft Server Need?](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-much-ram-does-a-minecraft-server-need).
3. In the panel, choose Paper (or your software) and your Minecraft version.
4. Accept the EULA, start the server and join with the address the host gives you.
5. Upload plugins and configs. See [How to Add Plugins](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-add-plugins-to-minecraft-server).
6. Test inside the refund window with [spark](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-read-spark-profiler-minecraft).

## Option 3: host on a VPS

A VPS gives you a private slice of a server with full control. You install Java, create a user, open only the Minecraft port, run the server in `tmux` or a `systemd` service, add backups and set up a domain. See [How to Host a Dedicated Minecraft Server on Linux](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-host-a-dedicated-minecraft-server) and [Minecraft VPS Hosting Guide](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-vps-hosting-guide).

## What a hosted server costs

| Cost | Notes |
| ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Hosting | Small plans are listed from a few dollars per month, rising with RAM |
| Backups | Often included, sometimes extra |
| Domain | A yearly fee |
| Plugins and configs | Many are free, some paid. See [Free vs Premium Configs](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/free-vs-premium-minecraft-configs) |

## Secure your server

1. Use a whitelist while you test. See [How to Whitelist Players](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-whitelist-players-minecraft-server).
2. Keep `online-mode=true` unless you run a secure login setup.
3. Do not expose RCON or databases. See [RCON Security](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-rcon-security-guide).
4. Back up regularly. See [Backup Strategy](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-backup-strategy).
5. Prepare for bots. See [Join Spam Defense](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-antibot-join-spam-defense).
