## How to Make a Modded Minecraft Server: Fabric and NeoForge

**Quick answer:** pick a mod loader (Fabric, NeoForge or Forge), install the matching **server** build for your Minecraft version, put the server-side mods in the `mods` folder, accept the EULA, and give every player the same mods and loader on their client. Modded servers do not run Bukkit plugins. If you want plugins, use Paper instead.

_Installer commands change between versions, so use the exact instructions on the loader's download page. Last checked October 2026._

## Mods vs plugins

| Mods | Plugins | |
| ------------------------- | ----------------------- | ------------------------------- |
| Software | Fabric, NeoForge, Forge | Paper, Spigot, Purpur |
| Players install them | Usually yes | No |
| Adds new blocks and items | Yes | Limited without a resource pack |
| Server admin tools | Fewer | Very large ecosystem |

See [Paper vs Fabric](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/paper-vs-fabric-for-minecraft-server) and [How to Add Plugins](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-add-plugins-to-minecraft-server).

## Choose a loader

| Loader | Good for |
| -------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Fabric | Lightweight mods, performance mods, fast updates to new Minecraft versions |
| NeoForge | Large content mods and many modern modpacks |
| Forge | Older modpacks that still depend on it |

Pick the loader your mods or modpack require. You cannot mix loaders.

## Step 1: check requirements

- **Java:** Minecraft 26.1 and newer need Java 25, and 1.20 to 1.21.11 use Java 21\. See [Update a Minecraft Server to 26.1+](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-26-1-server-update-guide).
- **RAM and CPU:** modded servers use more than vanilla. Big packs need much more RAM. See [RAM and Java Errors](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-java-heap-ram-errors).
- **Hosting:** choose a host with modpack support or a VPS. See [Best Minecraft Server Hosting](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/best-minecraft-server-hosting-2026) and [BisectHosting for Minecraft](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/bisecthosting-minecraft-features-modpacks).

## Step 2: install the server

### Fabric

1. Download the Fabric installer from fabricmc.net.
2. Run it in server mode for your Minecraft version, using the command the download page shows.
3. Start the generated launch jar and accept the EULA.

### NeoForge

1. Download the NeoForge installer for your Minecraft version.
2. Run it with the server install option shown on the download page.
3. Start the server using the generated script and accept the EULA.

Run the server once, then stop it so the folders are created.

## Step 3: add mods

1. Download mods from trusted pages such as Modrinth or the author's page. Avoid re-uploads.
2. Check each mod supports your Minecraft version and loader, and whether it is needed on the server, the client or both.
3. Put server-side mods in the server's `mods` folder.
4. Add required library mods, such as Fabric API for many Fabric mods.
5. Start the server and read the console.

## Step 4: set up the client

Every player needs the same loader, Minecraft version and the required client mods. Share a modpack file or an instance export so everyone matches. See [Create Mod Server Setup Checklist](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-create-mod-server-setup-checklist) for a worked example.

## Step 5: configure the server

Edit `server.properties` for the port, MOTD and gamemode. See [server.properties Explained](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-properties-explained). Use a whitelist for private servers. See [Whitelist Not Working?](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-whitelist-not-working). Set up backups before inviting players. See [Backup Strategy](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-backup-strategy).

## Common errors

| Symptom | Likely cause |
| ------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Client cannot join and mentions mismatched mods | The server and client mod lists differ |
| "Server send registries with unknown keys" or registry errors | Mod versions or loader versions do not match between client and server |
| Server crashes on startup | A mod needs a missing library, or targets a different Minecraft version |
| Very low TPS | A heavy mod or too little RAM. Profile with [spark](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-read-spark-profiler-minecraft) |
| Out of memory | Raise RAM and check Java flags. See [Aikar's Flags Explained](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/aikars-flags-performance-tuning) |

If the server crashes, read the log and [crash report](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-crash-report-guide) and remove the last mod you added.

## Performance tips

- Use performance mods that support your loader, and test one at a time.
- Pregenerate the world. See [World Pregeneration](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-world-pregeneration-launch-guide).
- Limit entities and automation machines.
- Consider a garbage collector test. See [ZGC for Minecraft Servers](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/zgc-minecraft-server-flags-guide).

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I make a modded Minecraft server?** Install a loader's server build, add server-side mods, and give players matching clients.

**Can I run mods and plugins together?** Not on standard servers. Choose mods or plugins.

**Fabric or NeoForge for a server?** Choose the loader your mods require. Fabric is lightweight, and NeoForge suits large content modpacks.

**Do all mods need to be on the server?** No. Some are client-only and some are server-only. Check each mod's page.

**How much RAM does a modded server need?** It depends on the pack. Follow the pack's recommendation and measure.
