# Setting Up ItemsAdder for Custom Items and Blocks

ZCraft StudiosOct 3, 2026Updated Oct 20, 2026

Vanilla's item pool is fixed. ItemsAdder adds genuinely new items, blocks, and furniture with custom textures and models, not reskinned vanilla items.

## Setting Up ItemsAdder for Custom Items and Blocks

_Not a reskinned vanilla item with custom lore. ItemsAdder adds entirely new items, blocks, and furniture with their own models and textures._

ItemsAdder lets servers add genuinely custom content (new items, blocks, and furniture with unique 3D models and textures), going beyond what's possible with vanilla items or simple custom-model-data tricks alone.

## Install ItemsAdder

[ItemsAdderCustom items, blocks and resource-pack content for your server.On Official site ](https://www.itemsadder.com/)

Download ItemsAdder from the project linked above. Check the supported Minecraft version, server platform, Java requirement and dependencies for the selected release.

1. Back up the server files and any plugin database.
2. Stop the server before changing JAR files. Put the compatible plugin build and its required dependencies in the correct plugin folder.
3. Start the server and read the startup log. Resolve missing dependencies or version errors before editing the generated configuration.
4. Stop the server, make one small configuration change, then restart and test it with a non-operator account.

Follow the current dependency and resource-pack instructions. Check pack delivery with a fresh client before adding custom content to a public world.

## Setting Up the Resource Pack Pipeline

```
resource_pack:
  generate: true
  host: "polymath"
```

ItemsAdder can auto-generate the resource pack from configured custom items and host it automatically, significantly simplifying what would otherwise be a fully manual resource-pack-building process (see the dedicated resource pack hosting guide for the manual approach).

## Defining a Custom Item

```
items:
  ruby_sword:
    display_name: "Ruby Sword"
    resource:
      material: DIAMOND_SWORD
      model_path: items/ruby_sword
    damage: 8.0
```

Each custom item references a model file and texture, built using a texture-editing tool (like Blockbench) to create the actual 3D model referenced here.

## Creating Custom Blocks

Custom blocks work similarly, defined with their own model and placement/breaking behavior. They're useful for decorative building blocks or functional blocks (a custom furnace variant, for instance) beyond vanilla's fixed block set.

## Furniture

ItemsAdder's furniture system lets custom, non-block decorative objects be placed in the world. Chairs, tables, and lamps can be positioned more flexibly than a standard block grid allows. It's commonly used for build-server or roleplay-focused servers wanting richer decoration options.

## Reloading After Adding Content

```
/iazip
/ia reload
```

regenerates the resource pack zip and reloads the plugin's custom content. Run it after adding or changing any custom item, block, or furniture definition.

## Players Need the Resource Pack to See Anything

Custom ItemsAdder content is entirely dependent on the player having the resource pack loaded. A player who declines the resource pack prompt sees placeholder or default textures instead of the actual custom models, which is worth communicating clearly to players, especially if `require-resource-pack` isn't forced on.

## Performance Considerations

A resource pack with a large number of custom models and textures increases the pack's file size and the client's loading time. Keeping custom content reasonably scoped, especially early on, avoids an oversized pack becoming a barrier to new players actually joining and playing.

## Resource-pack delivery test

Confirm that a brand-new client can download the required pack, join successfully and see custom items and blocks. Verify the resource-pack URL and hashes where applicable. Test updates with a returning player because cached assets can make a broken rollout appear successful to staff.

## Separate pack problems from item-definition problems

A missing custom model can begin at several different layers. Check whether the client downloaded the intended pack, whether the archive contains the expected asset and whether the server definition points to that asset. Use one test item while investigating. If every item is missing, start with pack delivery rather than editing each item separately. If only one item fails, compare its definition and namespace with a working item in the same pack.

Keep the resource pack and its server configuration together as one release. Record which pack belongs to which plugin version, and retain the last working pair. Updating only one side can produce a confusing mix of old textures and new definitions. Test a fresh client cache as well as a returning player. Include interactions with crafting, trading and protection in your acceptance notes, because a correct appearance does not demonstrate that the gameplay behavior is correct.

### Troubleshooting paths

- All models are missing: check download, archive structure and client compatibility.
- One model is missing: compare its namespace and definition.
- Only returning players fail: investigate cached pack delivery and update instructions.

## Debug missing textures systematically

Separate the problem into resource-pack delivery, client acceptance and asset configuration. First confirm the URL returns the expected archive and the pack is served without an error. Then check the player accepted and loaded it. Only after delivery works should you investigate model paths, namespaces, conflicting assets and logs.

Test using a fresh client profile as well as a previously connected player; cached resource packs can hide deployment problems.
