Spawn with a kit, fight, respawn, repeat. KitPvP is one of the simplest gamemodes to understand and one of the easiest to get wrong on setup.

## Setting Up a KitPvP Arena

_The gamemode itself is simple to explain to a player. Getting the arena mechanics right under the hood takes more setup than it looks like from outside._

KitPvP is a gamemode where players spawn with a predefined kit, fight other players for kills/currency, and respawn to fight again. It's straightforward conceptually, but it needs several supporting systems working together correctly.

## Core Plugin Requirements

A functional KitPvP setup typically needs:

- **EssentialsX** (or similar) for kit management and basic commands
- **A PvP-focused arena/spawn plugin**, or a Multiverse world configured specifically for the arena
- **Vault + an economy plugin**, since most KitPvP servers reward kills with currency

## Setting Up the Arena World

A dedicated, often flat or specifically-built world works better than repurposing a survival world. KitPvP doesn't need building, farming, or exploration mechanics, and a focused arena avoids the world bloat a full survival world accumulates over time.

```
/mv create kitpvp_arena flat
```

## Configuring Spawn Protection and Respawn

PvP arenas need spawn points protected from combat (so players aren't killed the instant they respawn). WorldGuard's `pvp deny` flag applied specifically to the spawn platform, combined with the rest of the arena allowing PvP, is the standard approach.

## Setting Up Kits

```
kits:
  starter:
    items:
      - DIAMOND_SWORD
      - BOW
      - ARROW:64
    cooldown: 0
```

Most KitPvP servers give the starter kit no cooldown (since it's the default loadout) while locking better kits behind a cooldown, currency cost, or rank, creating a progression incentive.

## Rewarding Kills

Combined with Vault, a kill-reward system (either built into the chosen arena plugin, or a separate Skript/plugin hook on the `PlayerDeathEvent`) pays currency per kill. This is usually the core economic loop the entire gamemode is built around.

## Handling Item Drops on Death

A decision needs to be made upfront: do players drop their kit items on death (creating item scarcity and risk) or keep their kit regardless (removing that risk, but also removing a meaningful part of what makes PvP combat have stakes)? Most dedicated KitPvP plugins support configuring this directly rather than relying on vanilla death-drop behavior.

## Leaderboards and Stats

Kill/death tracking, combined with a leaderboard display (via PlaceholderAPI and a hologram or GUI leaderboard), gives competitive players something to work toward beyond just the immediate fight. It's a common addition once the core gameplay loop is confirmed working.

## Preventing Combat Logging

A player disconnecting mid-fight to avoid a loss is a common complaint on PvP-focused servers. A combat tag system (preventing disconnect, or punishing it, for a short window after taking damage) is worth adding early rather than retrofitting after it becomes a recurring community complaint.

## Arena test plan

Check spawn protection, kit distribution, deaths, respawn placement, inventory clearing and rewards. Run a test where one player disconnects during combat. Verify that spectators cannot damage players or carry items into other worlds, and that players cannot leave the arena with restricted kits.

## Test arena boundaries and inventory recovery

Define where combat starts and ends, then walk across the boundary using a normal account. Check whether damage, kit access and inventory changes follow the same boundary. Test a death near the edge and a disconnect during combat. A lobby protection rule and an arena rule can overlap in ways that are difficult to see from an administrator account. Record the intended outcome before changing flags so the tests have a clear reference.

Review kits as a gameplay system rather than a list of expensive items. Compare movement, healing and cooldowns in short controlled fights. Test whether custom enchantments or abilities change protection behavior. Explain how players regain a kit and which items may leave the arena. Keep a recovery procedure for stuck players that does not duplicate inventories. After an update, repeat the combat and respawn cycle before reopening the arena to everyone.

### Troubleshooting paths

- Damage crosses the boundary: inspect region and arena rules together.
- Items escape into the lobby: review inventory isolation and exit handling.
- Player is stuck: use a documented recovery route and inspect resulting items.

## An operational test worth running

Play through repeated deaths and respawns, checking kit contents, spawn protection, inventory cleanup, combat tagging and spectator behavior. Try leaving the arena during combat and reconnecting. Keep arena-specific rules separate from the survival world so a PvP setting does not accidentally affect unrelated gameplay.
