## LiteBans vs. AdvancedBan vs. Essentials Punishments: Choosing a Punishment Plugin

_Every server can ban a player with EssentialsX alone. The question is what happens when someone asks "what's this player's full history" six months later._

## EssentialsX's Built-In Punishments

EssentialsX includes basic `/ban`, `/kick`, `/mute` commands out of the box. They're functional and genuinely enough for a small server without a dedicated moderation team tracking detailed history. It doesn't include a structured punishment history or appeal-friendly logging beyond basic command usage.

## LiteBans

Purpose-built around punishment history: every ban, mute, kick, and warning is logged with a timestamp, issuing staff member, and reason, queryable per player with `/history`. Supports MySQL for syncing punishments across a proxied network, so a ban on one backend server applies network-wide rather than being bypassable by switching servers.

## AdvancedBan

Similar core concept to LiteBans (structured punishment logging with history tracking), with its own command set and configuration style. Choosing between LiteBans and AdvancedBan often comes down to which command syntax and messages setup a server prefers, since both cover the same fundamental punishment-tracking need.

## The Real Decision Point

The question isn't really "which plugin is better" so much as "does this server need punishment history at all." A small, lightly-moderated server might never need more than EssentialsX's basic commands. A server with an active, multi-person staff team handling regular punishments benefits significantly from a dedicated plugin's history tracking, both for consistency across staff members and for handling ban appeals with an actual record to reference instead of relying on memory or scattered screenshots.

## Network Considerations

For any server running multiple backend servers behind a proxy, a dedicated punishment plugin with MySQL support (LiteBans or AdvancedBan, not Essentials' basic commands) is close to mandatory. Otherwise, a punishment issued on one backend doesn't apply anywhere else on the network.

## Customizing the Messages Players See

Whichever plugin is chosen, the punishment screen a player actually sees (on ban, mute, or kick) is one of the most visible moderation-related things on the entire server. It's worth spending real time on the messages config rather than leaving plugin defaults in place, regardless of which specific plugin is running underneath it.

## Questions for a real moderation trial

Instead of only counting commands, decide how your staff handle a report from beginning to end. A good test is to issue a short temporary mute to a test player, retrieve its history, explain the reason to the player and reverse it through an authorized staff account.

Check whether punishments are visible across all backends in a network, whether evidence references can be recorded, and whether staff can correct mistakes without deleting accountability. Verify how the chosen plugin stores records and how you will back them up.

**Costs and maintenance:** a paid plugin may provide a workflow you value, but purchasing it doesn't replace training, appeal policies or permission hygiene. An existing lightweight tool may be sufficient for a small private community.

Read each project's current support policy and test with the exact installed build before migrating old punishment data.

## A practical verification exercise

Choose based on history retention, moderation workflow, proxy support, permissions and maintenance effort, not just number of commands. Test staff logging and appeal lookups in a staging environment. Changing punishment systems may require data migration, and old sanctions should not silently disappear.
