# LuckPerms Config, Placeholders and Verbose Guide

ZCraft StudiosOct 19, 2026Updated Oct 20, 2026

Understand the LuckPerms config.yml, use LuckPerms placeholders for prefixes and groups, and debug permissions with verbose and permission check.

## LuckPerms Config, Placeholders and Verbose: Fix Permissions and Display Ranks

_Most LuckPerms problems are one of three things: a storage or server-name setting in `config.yml`, a placeholder that is not installed, or a permission nobody checked with verbose. This guide covers all three._

For groups, tracks and inheritance, start with the [LuckPerms Setup Guide](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/luckperms-ranks-setup-guide). This page is the follow-up for configuration and debugging.

## The config.yml settings that matter

LuckPerms creates `config.yml` in its plugin folder. Review these:

| Setting | What it does |

| --- | --- |

| `storage-method` | Where data is stored (for example H2 locally, or MySQL/MariaDB for networks) |

| `data` section | Database credentials and table prefix when using SQL storage |

| `server` | The server name used by contexts and server-specific permissions |

| `messaging-service` | How multiple servers sync changes |

| `sync-minutes` | How often data is refreshed from storage |

On a proxy network, use one shared database, a unique `server` name per backend, and a messaging service so changes propagate. Read [Sharing Player Data Across a Network With MySQL](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/mysql-cross-server-player-data) first.

## LuckPerms placeholders

LuckPerms placeholders need PlaceholderAPI and the LuckPerms expansion. Install the expansion with PlaceholderAPI's expansion command, then test with `/papi parse me <placeholder>`.

| Placeholder | Returns |

| --- | --- |

| `%luckperms_prefix%` | The player's prefix |

| `%luckperms_suffix%` | The player's suffix |

| `%luckperms_primary_group_name%` | Primary group name |

| `%luckperms_meta_<key>%` | A meta value, for example a rank color |

| `%luckperms_has_permission_<node>%` | Whether the player has a permission |

| `%luckperms_inherits_group_<group>%` | Whether the player inherits a group |

Use them in TAB, scoreboards and chat formats. If a placeholder prints as raw text, read [Setting Up PlaceholderAPI](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/placeholderapi-setup-guide). Some plugins, such as TAB, provide their own LuckPerms support, so check the plugin's documentation before adding the expansion.

## Debug permissions with verbose

When a command is denied, find the exact node being checked:

1. Run `/lp verbose on` (optionally with a player filter).
2. Have the player run the command.
3. Read the output for the permission nodes checked and their result.
4. Run `/lp verbose off`, and use `/lp verbose paste` if you need to share the log.

Then confirm with:

```
/lp user <name> permission check <node>
/lp user <name> info
/lp group <group> permission info
```

The result shows whether the node is set, inherited or denied, and in which context. A common cause is a more specific negative node overriding a wildcard. Another is a server context that does not match the `server` value in `config.yml`.

## Fix a prefix that does not show

1. Confirm the prefix is set with `/lp group <group> meta info`.
2. Confirm your chat plugin reads the prefix through Vault or a placeholder.
3. Check priorities if the player has several groups with prefixes.
4. Parse the placeholder in game with `/papi parse me %luckperms_prefix%`.

## Back up before changing storage

Changing `storage-method` does not move existing data automatically. Export first, switch, import, and test. The web editor and export commands are covered in the [setup guide](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/luckperms-ranks-setup-guide).
