## Setting Up mcMMO for RPG-Style Skills

_Every block broken and every mob killed quietly counts toward something. mcMMO turns ordinary survival actions into a leveling system._

mcMMO adds RPG-style skills tied to vanilla actions (mining, woodcutting, combat, fishing, and more), each leveling up independently with unlockable perks and abilities as players progress.

## Install mcMMO

[mcMMO](https://github.com/nossr50/mcMMO)

Download mcMMO from the project linked above. Check the supported Minecraft version, server platform, Java requirement and dependencies for the selected release.

1. Back up the server files and any plugin database.
2. Stop the server before changing JAR files. Put the compatible plugin build and its required dependencies in the correct plugin folder.
3. Start the server and read the startup log. Resolve missing dependencies or version errors before editing the generated configuration.
4. Stop the server, make one small configuration change, then restart and test it with a non-operator account.

Confirm mcMMO loads after a clean restart. Test the feature you need with an ordinary player account before adding optional integrations.

## How Skills Level Up

Experience is earned automatically through normal gameplay: mining ore levels Mining, chopping trees levels Woodcutting, fighting mobs or players levels the relevant combat skill. No separate command or menu is needed to "start" training a skill.

## Checking Skill Progress

```
/mcmmo
```

opens a player's skill overview. For a single skill specifically:

```
/mcstats
```

shows detailed levels across every skill at once.

## Skill Abilities

Each skill unlocks special abilities at certain levels. Mining unlocks Super Breaker (temporary faster mining with bonus drops), Excavation unlocks Giga Drill Breaker, and so on. These are typically activated by right-clicking while holding the relevant tool, triggering a timed ability window.

## Configuring Experience Rates

```
experience_formula:
  multiplier: 1.0
```

Adjusting the global multiplier up or down changes how fast players level. Tune it based on how grindy or fast-paced the server's intended progression curve should feel, since default rates are tuned for a fairly standard survival pace.

## Setting Skill Caps

```
skills:
  mining:
    max_level: 1000
```

Per-skill level caps prevent runaway power scaling on long-running servers. Without a cap, a dedicated player's abilities can eventually become significantly stronger than intended for the server's balance.

## Party System

mcMMO includes a built-in party system (`/party create`, `/party invite`) letting players share experience and certain bonuses while grouped, which is useful for servers encouraging cooperative play rather than purely solo progression.

## Balancing mcMMO Against Vanilla Difficulty

mcMMO's combat and gathering bonuses can meaningfully shift a server's difficulty curve. A max-level combat player can end up significantly stronger than vanilla combat alone would allow. Testing skill abilities at high levels before launch, and adjusting `max_level` or specific ability strength in config, avoids surprising balance issues once players start actually reaching high skill levels.

## Compatibility With Other Plugins

mcMMO hooks into a wide range of other plugins (Vault for any economy-tied perks, WorldGuard for region-based ability restrictions). Checking a specific plugin's mcMMO compatibility notes is worth doing before assuming every custom gameplay system automatically interacts correctly with mcMMO's ability triggers.

## Progression tuning

Test leveling rates for early, mid and late progression using realistic gameplay. Identify skills that reward repetitive farming disproportionately, and decide whether caps or adjustments are needed. Tell players which skills reset between seasons and which remain permanent.

## Plan progression and recovery together

Choose one skill path and follow it from a fresh account to the first useful ability. Record which actions create progress and which messages explain the result. If progression differs from your plan, inspect the configuration for that skill before changing global multipliers. Compare active play with an easily repeated action. A progression system should reward the activity you want players to enjoy rather than accidentally making a repetitive loop the best option.

Decide what a season reset means for skills, abilities and associated rewards. Back up player records before rehearsing a reset on a copy. Explain whether progress carries across worlds or servers and verify that behavior with a test account. Review abilities alongside claims and PvP rules, particularly where an ability changes blocks or combat. Keep notes on permitted behavior so staff can distinguish a configured ability from a player exploit during moderation.

### Troubleshooting paths

- Progress is absent: check skill settings and the recorded player identity.
- Progress is unexpectedly fast: review repeatable actions and reward multipliers.
- Ability bypasses intended rules: test its interaction with protection and PvP settings.

## An operational test worth running

Measure skill advancement during ordinary gathering, mining and combat, then compare with opportunities for unattended farming. Test whether configured boosts apply to intended worlds and groups only. Back up skill data before resetting levels or updating the plugin; progression is player history, not just configuration.
