## Setting Up a Minecraft Create Mod Server

The Create mod adds complex mechanical systems, so a Create server is not simply a Paper SMP with another plugin. You need the loader supported by your chosen Create release and a client/server mod combination that actually agrees.

**Quick answer:** Choose your exact Minecraft version first, obtain the official matching Create release and its documented dependencies, install a supported mod-loader server, then test a small world and one real machine before opening the server to everyone.

## Choose the mod ecosystem before your hosting plan

A modpack might use Forge, NeoForge or Fabric. The Create release and addons must support the same target Minecraft version and loader. Never assume an addon for one loader is interchangeable with another.

| Decision | What to verify |

| --- | --- |

| Minecraft version | Supported by the selected Create build |

| Mod loader | Matches Create and every required addon |

| Java | Supported by that specific Minecraft/loader release |

| Server pack | Includes server-side mods and startup guidance |

| Client pack | Players receive the matching required mods |

| Backups | Cover worlds, mods, configs and any external data |

For Minecraft server software choices, read [Paper vs Fabric](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/paper-vs-fabric-for-minecraft-server).

## Prefer a published server pack

If you are using an established modpack, find the pack's documented server distribution rather than copying a client directory blindly. Some client mods require graphical environments and do not belong on dedicated servers.

Keep the pack manifest, installed mod list and configuration files together in your change log. When testing an update, record both the old and new version sets so you can reproduce a working state.

## First-boot workflow

1. Create an empty server instance with a compatible Java runtime.
2. Install the exact loader release supported by the pack.
3. Copy the documented server mods and configurations.
4. Start once and read the complete console log.
5. Accept the Minecraft EULA only after reviewing it.
6. Join using a matching client profile.
7. Craft and operate a simple Create machine.
8. Save, restart and verify the machine state persists.

A startup message alone does not prove Create machinery or addon integrations work properly.

## Test mechanisms that create real load

Instead of guessing how much RAM a pack needs, test scenarios that reflect your players: several active contraptions, item transport, machines crossing chunk boundaries and exploration of new terrain.

Measure server tick time and heap/total process memory separately. A server can have free memory while the main game loop struggles with simulation. Follow [Minecraft Server Lag Diagnosis](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/reduce-minecraft-server-lag) and [Java/RAM Errors](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-java-heap-ram-errors) for a repeatable workflow.

## Set expectations for automation

Agree on rules for chunkloading, unattended factories and large automated systems before a public launch. Prefer an evidence-based limit over a blanket claim that a certain number of belts or machines is safe for every host.

Create a staff-owned test world for stressful designs. If an addon introduces a machine that behaves unexpectedly after a restart, reproduce it there rather than editing the live world immediately.

## Plan backup and update recovery

Back up the world, mod versions and configs together. A world that contains modded blocks may not load safely after required mods are removed. For upgrades, clone the world, test the new pack on staging and retain the old mod set alongside the original backup.

See [Minecraft Server Staging Guide](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-staging-environment-guide) and [Backup Strategy](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-backup-strategy).

## Common failures

| Symptom | First check |

| --- | --- |

| Server rejects a client | Matching mod list, versions and config |

| Missing mod dependency | Loader-specific dependency declared by mod |

| World crashes after update | Added/removed mods and migration notes |

| Machinery causes lag | Profile during the actual machine workload |

| Machines disappear or reset | Saved world state and addon compatibility |

## FAQ

### Can I run Create on Paper or Purpur?

Not as a normal Bukkit/Paper plugin. Choose a supported Create mod loader and build around that ecosystem.

### Does a Create server need more RAM than vanilla?

Often its workload and mods require more resources, but there is no universal memory amount. Measure the actual pack and number of active players.

### Can friends join without installing the modpack?

Clients generally need the corresponding client-required Create mods and dependencies. Check the distribution instructions for your specific pack.

**Bottom line:** Version compatibility and restore testing are more important than a large RAM advertisement. Start with a small working modpack, then measure actual factory behavior.
