## Setting Up a Pouch-Based Currency and Rewards System

_A physical item a player holds, trades, and opens themselves, instead of currency that just silently appears in a balance._

A "pouch" system gives out an item (a literal in-game object) that opens into currency, items, or both when right-clicked, as opposed to currency going straight into a player's economy balance. It's commonly used for event rewards, vote rewards, or crate-adjacent systems where a tangible, tradeable item feels better than an instant balance change.

## Why Use Pouches Instead of Direct Currency

- **Tradeable before opening.** A pouch is a real item, so it can be sold, gifted, or placed in a shop chest before anyone opens it, unlike currency already sitting in a balance.
- **Visually rewarding.** Receiving a physical item for an achievement or event reads better than a chat message saying a balance changed.
- **Flexible contents.** A single pouch tier can be configured to give a currency range, a chance at bonus items, or both, rather than a fixed flat amount.

## Installing a Pouches Plugin

This guide describes a plugin category rather than one named implementation. Pick a project with documentation for your server version. The sample commands and YAML below illustrate the workflow; use your chosen project’s documented syntax instead of copying them unchanged.

If your chosen plugin uses a Vault-compatible economy, these are example integrations. They are optional unless that project lists them as dependencies:

[VaultConnect compatible economy, permission and chat plugins through a shared API.On GitHub ](https://github.com/MilkBowl/Vault)

[EssentialsXThe essential plugin suite for Paper and Spigot servers.On Modrinth ](https://modrinth.com/plugin/essentialsx)

Drop the plugin jar into `plugins/` and restart. Most pouch plugins generate a default config defining one or two example pouch tiers automatically.

## Configuring a Pouch Tier

A typical pouch config entry looks roughly like:

```
pouches:
  small_coin_pouch:
    display-name: "&6Small Coin Pouch"
    item: PAPER
    custom-model-data: 1001
    min-reward: 50
    max-reward: 150
    open-message: "&aYou received &6%amount% coins&a!"
```

`min-reward`/`max-reward` define a random payout range, giving pouches of the same tier slightly different value rather than an identical fixed amount every time.

## Giving Pouches to Players

```
/givepouch <player> <pouch_id> [amount]
```

(command syntax varies by specific plugin). It's commonly triggered from a vote reward plugin, an event command block, or a kit, rather than typed manually by staff for each player.

## Tiered Pouch Systems

Larger pouch setups often define several tiers (small, medium, large, rare) with increasing value and decreasing drop chance, giving a sense of progression similar to a crate system but centered on currency rather than purely cosmetic or gear rewards.

## Integrating With Vault

Pouches that grant currency need a Vault-compatible economy plugin installed to actually deposit the reward into a player's balance on open. Without Vault hooked up, a pouch plugin has nothing to pay out into.

## Combining Pouches With Other Reward Systems

Pouches work well alongside (not instead of) a crate/key system. Crates commonly hold cosmetic or gear rewards, while pouches handle the currency side, keeping the two reward types visually and functionally distinct for players.

## Writing the Config By Hand vs. a Ready-Made Set

Building out a full tiered pouch system by hand, with multiple tiers, balanced reward ranges, and styled messages in more than one language, is a real amount of config writing before anything actually feels complete. ZCraft Studios' **[Deluxe Pouches Config](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/products)** ships 180+ pre-built pouches with English and Spanish language files, if starting from a finished set is preferable to building tier-by-tier from scratch.

## Troubleshooting: Pouch redeems twice or pays nothing

Inspect whether the reward is processed atomically and whether a reload or disconnect can trigger duplicate redemption. Check economy availability, inventory handling and errors during payout.

### How to verify the fix

Test with a disposable account using insufficient inventory space, rapid repeated interactions and server restarts. Document the exact expected payout before launching the system.

## A practical verification exercise

Test how vouchers behave when stacked, renamed, dropped, traded, stored, duplicated by inventory rollback or redeemed with a full inventory. Make sure the redeem action is idempotent where the implementation supports it, and verify economy credits cannot be claimed twice.
