# Dedicated Server vs VPS for Minecraft: Setup Guide

What "dedicated server" means in Minecraft, how a VPS differs from dedicated hardware, and a step-by-step setup for hosting your own server.

## Dedicated Server vs VPS for Minecraft: What Each Is and How to Set One Up

_"Dedicated server" means two different things in Minecraft, and hosting companies use it for a third. Sorting that out first makes the VPS-or-dedicated decision much easier._

## What "dedicated server" means

- **Minecraft's dedicated server software.** The `server.jar` from Mojang (or Paper, Purpur and others) runs without a game client, as opposed to opening a world to LAN or hosting through Realms. See [Minecraft Server vs. Realms](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-vs-realms).
- **A dedicated server machine.** A whole physical computer rented from a host. You get all of its CPU, RAM and disk.
- **A VPS (virtual private server).** A slice of a physical machine with guaranteed resources, isolated from other customers.

## Shared panel, VPS or dedicated?

| Option | Best for | You manage | Main risk |

| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| Shared panel hosting | First server, friends SMP | Almost nothing | Limited control, noisy neighbors |

| VPS | Most public servers, small networks | OS, Java, firewall, backups | Shared CPU quality varies |

| Dedicated | Large networks, many servers, heavy worlds | Everything, including hardware issues | Cost and admin time |

A VPS is the right default for most servers that have outgrown a panel. Dedicated hardware makes sense when you run several backends or a proxy network, when you have measured that a VPS is the bottleneck, and when someone on your team can administer Linux. See [Choosing a Minecraft Server Host](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/choosing-minecraft-server-host) for the longer comparison.

## What to look for in specs

- **Single-thread CPU speed.** The main game loop is largely single threaded, so fast cores beat many slow cores.
- **RAM.** Enough for the JVM plus the operating system. More RAM does not fix a slow CPU. See [RAM and Java Errors](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-java-heap-ram-errors).
- **NVMe storage.** World saves, chunk loading and backups all use the disk.
- **Network and location.** Pick a data center near most of your players. Check bandwidth limits with [Bandwidth and Data Usage](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-bandwidth-data-usage-guide).
- **DDoS protection and support.** Ask what is included and how fast support responds.

## Set up a Minecraft server on a VPS or dedicated machine

These steps assume a Linux machine and a Paper server. Use your provider's current instructions for the operating system image.

1. **Log in over SSH** and update the system packages.
2. **Create a non-root user** for the server and use SSH keys instead of passwords.
3. **Install the Java version** your Minecraft version requires. Check the [Paper documentation](https://docs.papermc.io/) for the current requirement.
4. **Create a server folder** and download Paper from the official site.
5. **Accept the EULA** by setting `eula=true` in `eula.txt` after reading it.
6. **Open the firewall** for SSH and the Minecraft port only (default `25565/tcp`). See [Hardening With a Firewall](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-firewall-hardening).
7. **Start the server inside `tmux` or `screen`**, or create a `systemd` service so it restarts after a reboot. See [Automatic Restarts and Crash Recovery](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-auto-restart-crash-recovery).
8. **Set your startup flags.** [Aikar's Flags Explained](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/aikars-flags-performance-tuning) covers when they help.
9. **Point a domain at the server** with an A record, and an SRV record if you use a custom port. See [Custom Domain and SRV Records](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-dns-srv-record-guide).
10. **Set up backups** before players join. See [A Minecraft Server Backup Strategy](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-backup-strategy).

If port 25565 is not reachable after this, use [Port 25565 Not Working](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-port-25565-not-working).

## Measure before upgrading

Many servers upgrade hardware when a plugin or entity farm is the real problem. Install [spark](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-read-spark-profiler-minecraft), check TPS and MSPT during peak hours, and compare with [TPS vs Ping vs FPS](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-tps-vs-ping-vs-fps). If one core is pinned at 100% while others are idle, a faster CPU helps more than more RAM.

## Estimate monthly cost

Include the machine, backup storage, a domain, DDoS protection if billed separately, and your own time. [Monthly Cost Planning](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-launch-cost-planning) has a worksheet for this.
