## level-type in server.properties: Minecraft World Types

**Quick answer:** `level-type` in `server.properties` chooses how the world is generated. The common values are `minecraft:normal`, `minecraft:flat`, `minecraft:large_biomes`, `minecraft:amplified` and `minecraft:single_biome_surface`. It only applies when the world is **first created**, so you must set it before the first start or generate a new world.

## World types

| Value                            | World                      | Use for                                    |
| -------------------------------- | -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| minecraft:normal                 | Standard survival terrain  | Most servers                               |
| minecraft:flat                   | Superflat                  | Creative, build servers, minigames         |
| minecraft:large\_biomes | Biomes scaled up | Exploration and long travel between biomes |
| minecraft:amplified | Extreme height terrain | Dramatic terrain. Heavier on performance |
| minecraft:single\_biome\_surface | One biome across the world | Themed servers                             |

Older versions used names without the namespace, such as `flat` or `LARGEBIOMES`. On current versions, use the namespaced form shown above and check the [Paper server.properties reference](https://docs.papermc.io/paper/reference/server-properties/) for your version.

## How to set the world type

1. Stop the server.
2. Delete or move the old world folder if you want a new world with the new type. Back it up first. See [Backup Strategy](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-backup-strategy).
3. Edit `server.properties`:

```
level-type=minecraft:large_biomes
level-seed=
```

1. Start the server so it generates the world.

Changing `level-type` on an existing world does not convert it. Chunks that already exist keep their terrain, and new chunks may mix with the old ones. See [Can You Change a Server Seed?](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-seed-existing-server-change).

## Superflat and generator-settings

For a flat world, `generator-settings` accepts a preset in JSON form that sets layers, biome and structures. Create the preset in a single-player world or a flat world generator, test it, and paste it into the file. Keep a copy of the working value. Syntax changed between versions, so confirm on your version.

## Seeds and structures

| Setting             | Effect                                               |
| ------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| level-seed | The seed used for generation, only at world creation |
| generate-structures | Villages, temples and other structures               |
| max-world-size      | World border limit                                   |

Choose seeds on a test server before launch. Pregenerate the world to avoid lag. See [World Pregeneration](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-world-pregeneration-launch-guide) and [WorldBorder Setup](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/worldborder-setup-guide).

## Extra worlds with different types

To run a normal main world plus a flat build world or a different resource world, use a multi-world plugin. See [Multiverse Setup](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/multiverse-multiple-worlds-setup) and [Resource World Reset](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-resource-world-reset).

## Performance notes

- **Amplified** terrain generates more complex chunks and costs more CPU and memory.
- **Large biomes** change feel, not cost.
- **Flat** is the cheapest to generate.

Profile with [spark](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-read-spark-profiler-minecraft) if generation causes lag. See [Fix Minecraft Server Lag](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/reduce-minecraft-server-lag).

## Minecraft 26.1 and newer

World storage changed in 26.1, with dimensions stored under `world/dimensions/`. Follow [Update a Minecraft Server to 26.1+](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-26-1-server-update-guide) when moving old worlds.

## Frequently asked questions

**What are the level types in Minecraft?** Normal, flat, large biomes, amplified and single biome.

**Can I change level-type after creating a world?** Not in a way that converts existing chunks. Create a new world.

**How do I make a flat world server?** Set `level-type=minecraft:flat` before the first start.

**What is generator-settings?** A setting that customizes flat worlds and some other generators.

**Does level-type affect performance?** Amplified costs more to generate. Flat is cheapest.
