## Minecraft Plugin Not Loading: How to Troubleshoot It

When a plugin appears disabled, fails during server startup or never creates a folder, the correct first step is to read the console error. Repeatedly reinstalling the same JAR rarely helps.

## Identify the symptom

| Symptom | What to check first |

| --- | --- |

| Plugin absent after startup | Wrong directory, wrong file or loader |

| Plugin errors while enabling | Stack trace, missing dependency, config |

| Plugin present but feature missing | Permissions, commands and settings |

| Plugin breaks after updating | Compatibility and data migration |

| Plugin works for OP only | Permission nodes and context |

## 1\. Confirm you're running a compatible server

Paper and Purpur support the Bukkit/Paper plugin ecosystem. Fabric mods are a different extension type; placing a Fabric mod into `plugins/` does not convert it into a Bukkit plugin.

Record your game version, server build and Java runtime. Confirm the plugin developer supports your combination rather than relying on a download filename.

Need help choosing a platform? Read [Paper vs Fabric](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/paper-vs-fabric-for-minecraft-server).

## 2\. Check the file itself

Download the released plugin artifact from an official project or developer distribution. Source code archives and build artifacts for a different platform may not work.

If the plugin expects a dependency, install a supported release of that dependency too. Restart and inspect the complete startup sequence.

Avoid hot-reload tools when debugging complex plugin failures, especially when dependencies or database connections are involved.

## 3\. Read the first error, not the last warning

Look for messages describing a missing class, missing dependency, unsupported API version, invalid configuration, or failed database connection.

Example diagnostic patterns:

```
UnknownDependencyException
UnsupportedClassVersionError
InvalidConfigurationException
```

These are categories, not interchangeable fixes. An unsupported Java class version suggests a Java compatibility mismatch. An invalid configuration suggests the plugin couldn't parse a file. Database connection errors require checking the service and credentials securely.

## 4\. Test the plugin with a clean config on staging

Back up the original data first. On a staging server, test with the default config _only if_ the plugin's documentation describes how to regenerate it safely.

Do not delete a production plugin folder just to force fresh settings. The folder may contain player data, databases or license information.

## 5\. Isolate conflicts without losing dependencies

If the failure appears only when another plugin is present, reproduce it on staging and inspect shared libraries, event hooks and overlapping systems. Group dependent plugins together during testing.

For example, a chat plugin and a TAB plugin may both manage visible player formatting. Two plugins attempting to own the same feature can create surprises even when both technically enable.

## 6\. Verify permissions as a normal player

An operator account may bypass failures that affect everyone else. Test the command as a normal member, then use your permissions plugin's diagnostics to see the specific missing node.

Read [LuckPerms rank setup](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/luckperms-ranks-setup-guide).

## 7\. Confirm the fix

The plugin must start without relevant errors, respond to its documented actions, persist required data across a restart and work for the intended user roles.

## Common questions

### Why is my plugin red in /plugins?

Some server implementations show a disabled plugin differently, but color alone is not a complete diagnostic. Inspect the startup log to determine why it disabled.

### Does changing Java fix every plugin error?

No. Java compatibility is only one possibility.

### Should I remove the plugin's data folder?

Not on production without understanding and backing up its contents.
