## Minecraft Server Resource Pack Download Failed: URL, SHA-1 and Client Fixes

## Understand where the failure happens

A resource pack can fail before download, during transfer or after the client receives it. The error category matters: an inaccessible URL is different from a corrupted ZIP or an asset format that the Minecraft client does not support. Don't rebuild the entire pack before checking delivery.

## Verify the URL directly

In a private browser session, open the configured resource-pack URL. It should return the intended ZIP, not a login page, an expired signed link, a redirect to an HTML download screen or a forbidden-access response. Avoid links requiring a session cookie. Confirm the file is downloadable by someone who has never accessed your hosting dashboard.

## Check relevant properties

Example property names for Java Edition include:

```
resource-pack=https://example.com/minecraft/pack.zip
resource-pack-sha1=
require-resource-pack=false
```

The URL is illustrative. If you use `resource-pack-sha1`, it should contain the 40-character hexadecimal SHA-1 digest of the **exact delivered ZIP bytes**. Modern server releases may also support an ID and prompt settings. Always consult documentation for the Minecraft version in use. SHA-1 here verifies pack consistency; it is not a substitute for a trusted HTTPS source.

## A clean test sequence

1. Download the pack through the public URL.
2. Verify it opens as a ZIP and contains the expected pack files.
3. Check the pack format against the intended Minecraft client version.
4. Compute the digest locally and compare it with `resource-pack-sha1`, if set.
5. Connect with a fresh client profile or cleared test cache.
6. Read client logs and server logs for the exact failure.

## Common symptoms

| Message or observation | Initial check |

| --- | --- |

| Download fails immediately | Public URL and access permissions |

| Pack downloads but is rejected | Hash, archive structure or format |

| Old textures remain | Client cache and changed ZIP/hash |

| Only some players fail | Their version, cache and connection |

| Custom item is invisible | Asset namespace, model definitions and required client features |

## Updating a pack safely

Change the archive at a new versioned path or ensure cache invalidation is reliable, update the configured hash and test using the same client version your audience uses. A resource pack may need extra validation when plugins generate content dynamically. Do not share private object-storage credentials in a publicly visible URL.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does the client say "Failed to download resource pack"?** The client could not fetch the file. Common causes are a URL that is not a direct download link, a link behind a login or preview page, an expired link, or a host that blocks automated requests.

**Does the URL have to be HTTPS?** Use a direct, publicly reachable link. Many setups use HTTPS; check what your host and client versions require.

**What is the SHA-1 for?** `resource-pack-sha1` lets the client check the file is the one you meant. If the hash does not match the file, the client may reject it. Regenerate the hash every time you change the pack.

**Why do some players fail and others do not?** Check the player's connection, client version and whether a proxy or plugin overrides the pack. Compare with a clean client.

**Why does the old pack still load?** Clients cache packs by hash and URL. Change the file, regenerate the hash, and use a new filename or versioned URL.

**Can I force the pack?** `require-resource-pack=true` kicks players who decline it, which can lock out players who cannot download it. Test before forcing.
