# AFK Detection and Auto-Kick Setup for Minecraft

Detect AFK players and kick them fairly with grace periods, exemptions and anti-farm checks that stop AFK pools without annoying real players.

## Setting Up AFK Detection and Auto-Kick

_A player slot held by someone who hasn't moved in twenty minutes is a slot a genuinely active player can't use._

On servers with a player cap, AFK (away-from-keyboard) players quietly holding a slot is a real cost. AFK detection flags inactive players, and auto-kick frees the slot after enough idle time.

## Using EssentialsX's Built-In AFK Detection

EssentialsX includes basic AFK detection out of the box, triggered by a period of no movement or input:

```
# in config.yml
auto-afk: 300
auto-afk-kick: 600
```

`auto-afk` (in seconds) marks a player AFK after that much inactivity; `auto-afk-kick` kicks them after that much total idle time, if configured above zero.

## Manually Toggling AFK Status

```
/afk
```

lets a player mark themselves AFK voluntarily. This is useful for a player who's stepping away briefly but doesn't want to be flagged as unresponsive in the meantime (some servers display an AFK tag in the tab list or above a player's head).

## Excluding Certain Players or Groups

Staff, or players actively doing something that looks idle but isn't (AFK fishing setups, for one common example, are sometimes intentionally allowed) can be exempted from auto-kick via permission node, typically something like `essentials.afk.kickexempt`, configurable per rank through LuckPerms.

## Dedicated AFK Plugins for More Control

For more granular behavior, such as different timeouts per world, AFK pools (a designated area players get teleported to while AFK, keeping them separate from active gameplay areas), or more detailed activity detection beyond basic movement, a dedicated AFK plugin offers more configuration surface than Essentials' built-in version.

## Balancing Detection Sensitivity

Overly aggressive AFK detection (triggering from legitimately idle-looking but active behavior, like standing still while reading chat or planning a build) creates a frustrating experience for genuinely present players. A timeout in the range of several minutes before flagging AFK, with a longer window before an actual kick, tends to balance slot-reclaiming against false positives reasonably well. Exact numbers depend on what a specific server's playstyle actually looks like.

## Why This Matters More as a Server Grows

A small, uncapped server has little reason to care about AFK slot usage. A server with a hard player cap during peak hours, where new players are seeing "server full" while idle accounts sit connected, benefits directly and measurably from reclaiming those slots automatically rather than relying on staff to notice and manually kick inactive players.

## Test the timers before enabling auto-kick

AFK detection and AFK kicking are separate behaviors. A player may be marked away while still connected, so test both timers rather than assuming the visible AFK tag proves the kick threshold works.

Use a test account without staff exemptions. Stay completely inactive until the first threshold, check when the status changes, and continue until the configured kick point. Repeat while reading chat or standing in a safe area to see whether your chosen timing is too aggressive.

### Suggested policy questions

| Question | Why it matters |

| --- | --- |

| Are you frequently at the player limit? | Auto-kick is more useful when slots are scarce |

| Do players build or read while stationary? | Very short timers may frustrate active players |

| Are staff or paid ranks exempt? | Exceptions can make a policy feel unfair |

| Is idle farming permitted? | Define the rule before automating enforcement |

### When users report unexpected kicks

Check the configured values and exemption permissions first. Then inspect the server console for other disconnect causes, such as network timeouts or proxy issues. Not every disconnected player was kicked by the AFK system.

See the [EssentialsX documentation](https://essentialsx.net/wiki/Home.html) for version-specific configuration details.

## Make AFK rules predictable

Differentiate a status marker from an automatic kick. Choose a timeout consistent with your server capacity and gameplay, and test common legitimate situations such as building, farming and temporarily leaving the keyboard. Published AFK rules reduce confusion when idle players are removed.

If an AFK plugin interacts with rewards, chat or tab lists, verify those integrations separately; there may be more than one definition of an idle player.
