## Minecraft Server 'Can't Keep Up!' Warning: What It Means and How to Diagnose It

## What the warning means

The message `Can't keep up! Is the server overloaded?` indicates that the server's execution is running behind expected timing. It does not, by itself, identify the reason. A single warning during initial generation can be very different from recurring warnings whenever players join.

## Understand the tick budget

At 20 ticks per second, one tick has a 50-millisecond budget. If the server consistently needs more than that for game work, it cannot sustain the target tick rate. TPS is an outcome; **MSPT** helps show how much tick work is taking. Client FPS and network ping are separate measurements.

## Collect evidence under actual load

Record server version, Java runtime, player count, loaded chunks and simulation settings. Use a compatible profiler such as [spark](https://spark.lucko.me/) while the slowdown is occurring. Keep the report and a short change log so you can compare conditions later.

## Interpret common patterns

| Pattern | Check |

| --- | --- |

| Slowdown during new exploration | Chunk generation and disk/CPU workload |

| Slowdown near player farms | Active entities, hoppers and redstone |

| Slowdown after plugin update | Main-thread tasks and version compatibility |

| Slowdown only during backups | Disk contention and snapshot scheduling |

| Bad latency but normal MSPT | Network path rather than tick overload |

## Change one variable at a time

On staging or during a controlled maintenance period, test adjustments such as simulation distance, world pregeneration and plugin scheduling. Verify whether a change affected player experience as intended. A smaller simulation distance can reduce workload but also alter gameplay; explain that trade-off to the community.

## Do not assume RAM is the answer

Insufficient heap can cause garbage collection or memory failures, but plenty of memory does not guarantee fast ticks. If a profiler identifies expensive simulation code, allocating more memory may change little. If the host kills the process, diagnose memory separately.

## Verify the improvement

Compare MSPT and warning frequency during similar activity before and after the change. Record the player count and event type. Avoid declaring a fix based on a quiet five-minute interval when the original symptom occurred only during a large event.

## What the numbers mean

| Term | Meaning |

| --- | --- |

| TPS | Ticks per second. A healthy server runs at 20 |

| MSPT | Milliseconds per tick. It must stay under 50 to hold 20 TPS |

| Tick budget | 50 ms to finish all game logic each tick |

The warning appears when the server cannot finish a tick within its budget, so it falls behind. It usually means one thing is taking too long, not that the whole server is too small.

## Common causes and first checks

| Cause | How to check |

| --- | --- |

| Too many entities | Count mobs and item entities by chunk; check spark for entity ticking |

| A slow plugin | Profile with spark and look for plugin names high in the server thread |

| Chunk generation | Players exploring new terrain; consider [pregeneration](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-world-pregeneration-launch-guide) |

| Autosave or backups | Lag spikes on a schedule; check [backup timing](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-backup-strategy) |

| Slow disk | High I/O wait; see [sync-chunk-writes](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/sync-chunk-writes-server-properties) |

| Weak CPU | Main thread pinned while other cores idle; see [Dedicated Server vs VPS](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-dedicated-server-vs-vps) |
