# In-Game Report System Setup for Minecraft Servers

ZCraft StudiosOct 3, 2026Updated Oct 20, 2026

"Just tell a staff member" doesn't scale past a handful of concurrent players. A report command gives every player a structured way to flag a problem.

## Setting Up an In-Game Report System

_Past a certain player count, "find a staff member and explain what happened" stops being a reasonable moderation system._

A dedicated `/report` command gives players a structured way to flag rule violations, with context automatically captured, rather than relying on them tracking down an online staff member and explaining the situation from scratch.

## What a Report System Actually Needs

At minimum, a useful report captures:

- The reporting player
- The reported player
- A reason/category
- A timestamp
- Ideally, recent chat or combat log context around the incident

## Using a Dedicated Report Plugin

Several plugins (varying by specific name and version availability) implement `/report <player> <reason>`, logging the report to a file, database, or directly alerting online staff. Installing one typically looks like any other plugin: drop the jar, restart, configure the alert channel or storage method in its config.

## Routing Reports to Discord

Many report plugins support a webhook or DiscordSRV integration, posting new reports directly into a staff-only Discord channel. This matters more than it might seem, since staff aren't always logged into the game but are far more likely to be reachable on Discord, especially for a volunteer moderation team.

## Combining With CoreProtect for Context

A report alone says "this happened". Pairing it with CoreProtect's `/co lookup` on the reported player gives staff actual evidence (block changes, container access) around the reported timeframe, rather than relying purely on the reporting player's account of what happened.

## Preventing Report Abuse

A reporting system that's too easy to spam becomes noise instead of signal. Common mitigations:

- A cooldown between reports from the same player
- A minimum reason length (preventing blank or single-word reports)
- Tracking repeat false reports from the same source, for staff to weigh accordingly

## Building a Lightweight Version With Skript

For a server not ready to add another full plugin, a basic report command logging to a Discord webhook can be built directly in Skript. It covers the core "capture and alert" function without the overhead of a dedicated plugin, though without some of the more advanced features (chat log capture, cooldown tracking) a purpose-built plugin would include.

## Why This Matters as a Server Grows

A small server can rely on staff being online and visible most of the time. Past a certain size, players regularly encounter issues when no staff happen to be online or nearby. A report system is what turns "nobody saw it happen" into an actual, actionable record staff can review later.

## Build reports staff can act on

A useful player report includes enough information to review an incident without forcing the reporter to repeat everything in chat. Collect only what staff actually need.

### Suggested report record

| Data | Example of use |

| --- | --- |

| Reporter | Send updates and detect duplicate reports |

| Reported player | Identify the account involved |

| Rule category | Route to the right moderator |

| Timestamp and world | Narrow the search for logs |

| Short description | Capture context in the reporter's words |

| Status and reviewer | Track handling and accountability |

Reports are allegations, not proof. Keep the information private to authorized staff and do not automatically punish a player solely because several reports arrive.

### Acceptance test

Submit a report from a normal player, verify staff receive it, mark it reviewed, and confirm it cannot be seen by unrelated players. Test invalid usernames, duplicate submissions and a full report queue. Decide in advance how long reports and attached evidence should be retained.

## Test the staff workflow from start to finish

Use two ordinary player accounts to file a test report. Confirm that it appears to authorized moderators, includes useful context, and cannot be read or closed by unrelated players. Record what happens when the reported player disconnects and when staff are offline.

Keep reports access-controlled, establish retention rules, and avoid publishing sensitive player details in public Discord channels. A report queue is only useful if staff have a reliable way to review and resolve it.
