## Minecraft Server Whitelist Not Working? Fix Access and Allowlist Errors

## Start with the exact symptom

A whitelist controls who may join, but errors can be caused by account authentication, the wrong server backend or a command applied to the wrong instance. First record the exact kick message. Do not turn off authentication to make a whitelist error disappear.

## Check the active setting

On supported Java servers, `white-list=true` in `server.properties` enables whitelist enforcement. Commands such as `whitelist list`, `whitelist add <player>` and `whitelist reload` are commonly available through the server console, with exact syntax and permissions depending on software. Back up the configuration before manual edits. The modern term _allowlist_ describes the same access-control idea.

## Which failure do you have?

| Symptom | Investigate |

| --- | --- |

| Invited player is rejected | Correct player identity, spelling and authentication |

| Uninvited player joins | Whitelist enabled on the actual active server |

| Whitelist commands seem ineffective | Console target, plugin overrides and proxy topology |

| Works before restart, fails after | File persistence and configuration changes |

| Everyone loses access after migration | Changed authentication/UUID mapping |

## Proxy networks need separate checks

If you use Velocity, the public proxy and backend servers each have their own connection path. Verify the intended access-control design and forwarding settings. Do not assume that editing a whitelist on one backend protects every backend or the public proxy. Backend listeners should only accept properly authorized proxy traffic.

## Test with two accounts

Use one approved account and one unapproved account. Confirm that the approved account can connect, the unapproved account receives the expected denial and both outcomes persist after restart. Check the console for mismatched account identity and record where staff should issue future invite commands.

## Avoid common shortcuts

Do not grant operator permissions to everyone as an invitation workaround. Do not switch `online-mode` as a casual fix: identity changes can affect inventories, claims and permissions. Avoid sharing `whitelist.json` or other player records publicly without review.

## Console commands to know

On supported Java servers (command names vary by software):

```
whitelist on
whitelist add <player>
whitelist remove <player>
whitelist list
whitelist reload
```

If a player is rejected, check that the name matches their account exactly and that the whitelist file was saved. After you edit `whitelist.json` by hand, run `whitelist reload`.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does it say "You are not white-listed on this server"?** The account is not on the list, or the server is checking a different identity, for example after changing `online-mode`.

**Is whitelist the same as allowlist?** Yes. Newer documentation uses "allowlist" for the same idea.

**Should I use a whitelist on a public server?** Usually not. Use it for private SMPs, testing, or during an attack. See [Join Spam Defense](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-antibot-join-spam-defense).

**Do operators bypass the whitelist?** That depends on your software and settings. Test with a non-operator account.
