# Roleplay SMP Setup: Lore, Whitelist, Voice Chat and Builds

## Roleplay SMP Setup: Lore, Whitelist, Voice Chat and Builds
**Quick answer:** a roleplay SMP is a private survival server built around characters and story. You need a **whitelist with an application process**, a **lore document**, **proximity voice chat**, a **recognizable spawn or hub**, and light plugins that protect builds and log changes. The tech is simple. The community and story are the hard part.

## Step 1: write the lore and rules first
1. Write one page of world lore: setting, factions, tone and where players start.

4. Decide how stories progress: scheduled arcs, player-driven or both.
5. Decide whether PvP and raiding are allowed and under what conditions.

## Step 3: add proximity voice chat
Voice makes roleplay feel alive. The most common choice is the **Simple Voice Chat** plugin. Players also need the matching mod on their client, so explain this in your application and rules. It uses a separate UDP port (24454 by default), which you must open on your host and firewall. Bedrock players cannot use the Java mod directly, so decide up front whether your server is Java-only.
