# ShopGUIPlus Setup: Build an In-Game GUI Shop

ZCraft StudiosOct 3, 2026Updated Oct 20, 2026

ChestShop needs a physical chest per shop. A GUI shop plugin gives every player the same menu-based buy/sell interface from anywhere on the server.

## Setting Up a GUI Shop With ShopGUIPlus

_No chest, no sign, no physical location. Just a command that opens a menu._

GUI shop plugins provide a centralized, menu-based shop accessible from a command rather than requiring a physical chest and sign setup per item, as ChestShop-style plugins do. ShopGUIPlus is one of the more widely used options for this approach.

## Install ShopGUIPlus

Download ShopGUIPlus from the project linked above. Check the supported Minecraft version, server platform, Java requirement and dependencies for the selected release.

1. Back up the server files and any plugin database.
2. Stop the server before changing JAR files. Put the compatible plugin build and its required dependencies in the correct plugin folder.
3. Start the server and read the startup log. Resolve missing dependencies or version errors before editing the generated configuration.
4. Stop the server, make one small configuration change, then restart and test it with a non-operator account.

Confirm ShopGUIPlus loads after a clean restart. Test the feature you need with an ordinary player account before adding optional integrations.

## Basic Shop Structure

Shops are organized into categories, each containing items with buy/sell prices, configured in YAML files under `plugins/ShopGUIPlus/shops/`:

```
items:
  diamond:
    material: DIAMOND
    buyPrice: 50.0
    sellPrice: 25.0
    buyCommand: ""
    sellCommand: ""
```

## Opening the Shop

```
/shop
```

opens the main shop GUI for the player. Category organization and item display are handled automatically based on the configured shop files.

## Creating Multiple Categories

```
categories:
  blocks:
    name: "&6Blocks"
    icon: GRASS_BLOCK
  tools:
    name: "&7Tools & Weapons"
    icon: DIAMOND_SWORD
```

Each category becomes its own page/tab within the main shop GUI, keeping a large item catalog organized rather than one long scrollable list.

## Dynamic Pricing (Optional)

Some GUI shop plugins support dynamic pricing, with prices shifting based on how much of an item has recently been bought or sold server-wide, discouraging players from flooding the market with one item to drain the shop's effective value. Whether this fits a specific server's economy design is worth deciding deliberately rather than enabling by default.

## GUI Shops vs. Player-Run Shops (ChestShop)

These aren't mutually exclusive, and many servers run both: a GUI/admin shop for baseline items at fixed prices, alongside ChestShop-style player shops for player-to-player trading and rarer or custom items the admin shop doesn't stock. The admin shop acts as a price floor/ceiling reference point, while player shops handle everything the admin catalog doesn't cover.

## Restricting What's Buyable

Items that would break the server's economy if freely purchasable (certain rare materials, admin-only items) should simply not be added to the shop catalog. A GUI shop plugin only sells what's explicitly configured, so omission is the control mechanism rather than needing a separate restriction system.

## Reloading After Config Changes

```
/shopgui reload
```

applies config changes without needing a full server restart, which is useful when iterating on prices or category layout.

## Shop configuration audit

Create a small test category and confirm buy price, sell price, item quantity and permission restrictions. Test a purchase with insufficient money and with a full inventory. Review whether any buy-sell price combination creates an infinite-profit loop, and cross-check prices against other server shops.

## Troubleshooting: Shop opens but purchases fail

Check whether a compatible economy provider and required bridge are installed. Verify item identifiers, permission nodes, balance handling and the selected shop's configuration. Inspect console messages produced by a failed purchase.

### How to verify the fix

Test a purchase and sale with two accounts, including a full inventory and insufficient funds. Confirm no combination of buy and sell prices creates an unintended currency loop.

## Investigate a transaction from both ends

Record the selected product, quantity, balance and inventory before a test purchase. Check the same values afterward. If the result differs, inspect the shop definition and the economy provider separately. Test with an account that lacks any staff bypass. A successful menu click does not prove that the intended item metadata or amount was delivered. Keep a cheap test product available so staff can reproduce problems without affecting the live economy.

Review buying and selling together. A price pair can create unintended profit when it interacts with crafting, rewards or custom items. Check which forms of an item the shop accepts and which it delivers. Explain restricted categories and failed transactions in player-facing language. When income rates change elsewhere on the server, review the shop's role as a source or sink of currency instead of assuming that old prices remain appropriate forever.

### Troubleshooting paths

- Currency changes but no item arrives: inspect delivery and inventory handling.
- Wrong item is sold: compare the accepted metadata and quantity.
- Loop creates profit: review prices alongside recipes and reward systems.

## Confirm buying and selling are symmetrical where intended

With a normal player account, test a purchase, a sale, insufficient funds, a full inventory and an item whose metadata differs from the shop definition. Check that the economy balance changes only once and the menu displays the price the player actually pays.

If some items should be buy-only or sell-only, make that explicit. A shop with unintended buy-back prices can become an infinite money source when paired with crafting or another shop.
