# sync-chunk-writes: What It Does and When to Disable It

ZCraft StudiosOct 19, 2026Updated Oct 20, 2026

sync-chunk-writes controls how Minecraft flushes chunk data to disk. Learn what it does on vanilla and Paper, and when changing it is safe.

## sync-chunk-writes in server.properties: What It Does and Should You Disable It?

_`sync-chunk-writes` appears in almost every Minecraft optimization guide, often with the advice to set it to `false`. Whether that advice applies to you depends on which server software you run._

## What the setting does

`sync-chunk-writes` lives in `server.properties` and defaults to `true`. When enabled, the server writes chunk data to the region files synchronously. That makes saves more predictable, but each write waits for the disk, which can be slow on hard drives and busy storage.

## Paper and its forks

Paper changed how this setting is handled. Paper hides synchronous chunk writes behind a Java system property, `-Dpaper.enable-sync-chunk-writes=true`. Many guides note the option is effectively forced off on Paper and its forks, so editing the value in `server.properties` does not change much there. Check the [Paper documentation](https://docs.papermc.io/paper/reference/system-properties/) for the behavior in your version before relying on this.

## Vanilla, Fabric and Spigot

On software without that change, guides commonly recommend setting `sync-chunk-writes=false` to reduce disk waits:

```
sync-chunk-writes=false
```

The tradeoff is durability. With asynchronous writes, a crash or power loss can lose the most recent chunk changes, because data may not yet have reached the disk. Keep reliable backups before changing it.

## Should you change it?

| Situation | Recommendation |

| --- | --- |

| Paper, Purpur or another Paper fork | Leave it alone and tune elsewhere |

| Vanilla, Fabric or Spigot on an HDD | Setting `false` may reduce disk stalls; back up first |

| Vanilla or Fabric on NVMe | Usually little to gain; measure before changing |

| Frequent crashes or unclean shutdowns | Keep `true` and fix the crashes first |

## Measure instead of guessing

1. Install [spark](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/how-to-read-spark-profiler-minecraft) and capture a profile during a busy period.
2. Look at the server thread for time spent in chunk saving or I/O.
3. Change one setting, restart, and capture another profile.
4. Revert if the results do not improve.

If lag spikes line up with autosave, look at world size, storage speed and [pregenerating the world](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-world-pregeneration-launch-guide) before changing flags. ## Protect worlds from write problems

Disk and chunk writes are also related to corruption after crashes. Use [Automatic Restarts and Crash Recovery](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-auto-restart-crash-recovery), stop the server cleanly before backups, and read [Chunk Corruption Recovery](https://www.zcraftstudios.com/blog/minecraft-server-chunk-corruption-recovery).
