# Linking Vault to an Economy Plugin: The Full Setup

ZCraft StudiosOct 3, 2026Updated Oct 20, 2026

Vault does nothing on its own. It's the bridge that lets every other plugin share one economy instead of each keeping its own separate balance.

## Linking Vault to an Economy Plugin: The Full Setup

_Vault is invisible when it's working. Every plugin just shares one balance instead of six plugins keeping six separate ones._

Vault is an API bridge, not an economy itself. It lets shop plugins, kit plugins, and anything else that charges or pays players talk to whichever economy plugin is actually installed, without each one needing its own integration.

## Install Vault First

[VaultConnect compatible economy, permission and chat plugins through a shared API.On GitHub ](https://github.com/MilkBowl/Vault)

Download Vault from the project linked above. Check the supported Minecraft version, server platform, Java requirement and dependencies for the selected release.

1. Back up the server files and any plugin database.
2. Stop the server before changing JAR files. Put the compatible plugin build and its required dependencies in the correct plugin folder.
3. Start the server and read the startup log. Resolve missing dependencies or version errors before editing the generated configuration.
4. Stop the server, make one small configuration change, then restart and test it with a non-operator account.

Vault is a bridge, not a currency system. Install an economy provider separately and check that a shop can both charge and credit a test player.

## Install an Economy Provider

EssentialsX ships its own built-in economy and registers with Vault automatically once both are installed. For most servers, this is the entire setup:

```
plugins/
  Vault.jar
  EssentialsX.jar
```

No extra configuration is needed. Essentials detects Vault on startup and hooks in.

## Confirming the Hook Worked

```
/vault-info
```

reports which economy, permission, and chat plugins Vault is currently hooked into. If it shows "None" under Economy, the economy plugin either isn't installed correctly or loaded in the wrong order. Check the server's startup log for a Vault-related error.

## Using a Dedicated Economy Plugin Instead

Some servers use a dedicated economy plugin (like EssentialsX Economy standalone, or a custom one) instead of Essentials' built-in version, usually for more configuration options, such as multiple currencies, bank accounts, or interest. These also register with Vault the same way; only the installed jar changes, not anything downstream that depends on Vault.

## Why This Matters for Shop Plugins

Shop plugins (chest shops, GUI shops, auction houses) almost universally depend on Vault rather than any specific economy plugin directly. That's the entire point: swapping the economy plugin later doesn't require reconfiguring every shop plugin that charges players, as long as both still talk through Vault.

## Troubleshooting a Broken Hook

- **Load order matters.** Vault needs to load before the economy plugin registers. This is usually handled automatically by each plugin's dependency declarations, but a manually forced load order in `plugins/` naming can occasionally interfere.
- **Multiple economy plugins installed at once** will cause Vault to hook into whichever loaded first, silently ignoring the other. Only one economy plugin should be active at a time.
- **Permissions plugin conflicts:** Vault also bridges permission plugins (like LuckPerms) the same way it bridges economy. `/vault-info` reports both, so a broken permission hook shows up in the same command.

## Putting this into practice

A policy or gameplay change is only useful if players experience it consistently. Write a small rollout plan: what changes, who owns it, how it will be explained to the community, and when staff will review its effect.

### A practical rollout checklist

- \[ \] Describe the problem in one sentence before proposing a solution.
- \[ \] Choose one measurable sign of improvement, such as fewer repeat support tickets or better new-player completion.
- \[ \] Test the change with staff and a small group of players first.
- \[ \] Document rules, exceptions, and how decisions are reviewed.
- \[ \] Announce any player-facing change clearly before enabling it.
- \[ \] Revisit the result after a reasonable period and adjust if needed.

Avoid changing multiple systems simultaneously: it becomes harder to tell which change helped and which created a problem.

## Integration verification

Vault is an API bridge, not a complete economy provider. Install a supported economy plugin as well, then test a balance lookup, a deposit and a withdrawal through the shop or jobs plugin that will use it. Confirm that all integrations point to the same economy provider.

## Diagnose the economy chain in order

Treat the feature as a chain: the player uses a shop, the shop requests an economy operation, and the provider owns the balance. Identify the components in your actual setup before troubleshooting. Read startup logs for a failed provider, then use the provider's balance command with a test account. If that works, test the shop. This avoids repeatedly replacing Vault when the balance owner or consumer is the part that failed.

Document the provider and any player-data migration before switching economy plugins. A replacement that starts successfully may still have an empty balance table. Test a small export and import on a copy, compare several known balances and confirm how player identities are matched. Never assume unrelated economy plugins share data simply because both support Vault. Keep the original records until recovery has been verified, and tell players about any intentional reset separately from the technical migration.

### Troubleshooting paths

- No economy detected: inspect the provider's startup result and registration.
- Balance exists but purchase fails: check the shop's dependency and permissions.
- Balances changed after migration: compare identity mapping and imported records.

## An operational test worth running

Vault bridges plugin integrations; it is not itself an economy account system. Confirm the chosen economy provider is installed and registered, then test a shop purchase, a job payout and a balance lookup from ordinary player accounts. A missing provider often presents as a plugin error even though Vault loaded successfully.
