# Setting Up Vulcan Anti-Cheat: A Configuration Guide

Installing Vulcan takes five minutes. Tuning it so it catches real cheaters without flagging laggy legitimate players takes considerably longer.

## Setting Up Vulcan Anti-Cheat: A Configuration Guide

_The install is the easy five minutes. Getting the detection sensitivity right for an actual playerbase is the part that takes longer._

Vulcan detects movement, combat, and world-interaction cheats, aiming for a lighter performance footprint than some alternatives while covering the common cheat categories most servers need caught.

## Install Vulcan

Download Vulcan from the project linked above. Check the supported Minecraft version, server platform, Java requirement and dependencies for the selected release.

1. Back up the server files and any plugin database.
2. Stop the server before changing JAR files. Put the compatible plugin build and its required dependencies in the correct plugin folder.
3. Start the server and read the startup log. Resolve missing dependencies or version errors before editing the generated configuration.
4. Stop the server, make one small configuration change, then restart and test it with a non-operator account.

Start by observing staff alerts on staging. Test legitimate movement and combat before configuring automatic punishment.

## Checking Detection Alerts

```
/vulcan alerts
```

toggles live staff alerts for flagged players. Enabling this for staff with the right permission lets moderators see violations as they happen, rather than reviewing logs after the fact.

## Reviewing a Specific Player

```
/vulcan profile <player>
```

shows a player's current violation history and detection profile, useful for deciding whether a flagged player needs action or is a false positive worth tuning around.

## Adjusting Detection Sensitivity

Vulcan's config breaks detections down by category (movement, combat, et al.), each with its own sensitivity settings:

```
checks:
  movement:
    speed:
      enabled: true
      sensitivity: medium
  combat:
    killaura:
      enabled: true
      sensitivity: medium
```

Starting at medium sensitivity and adjusting after watching real flagged players (not just staff testing) for a while is more reliable than guessing at the right setting upfront.

## Setting Up Punishments

Vulcan can auto-punish based on violation thresholds, or purely alert staff for manual review:

```
punishments:
  movement.speed:
    - violations: 10
      command: "kick %player% Unfair advantage detected"
    - violations: 20
      command: "tempban %player% 1d Repeated cheat detection"
```

Starting with alert-only (no auto-punish) during the initial tuning period, then enabling auto-punishment once false-positive rates are confirmed low, is the safer rollout path for a new install.

## Handling Ping Compensation

High-ping players naturally behave differently than low-ping ones from the server's perspective. Vulcan includes ping compensation settings that matter more on networks with a geographically spread playerbase, where flagging every high-ping player as a false positive would otherwise be a real problem.

## Checking for Plugin Conflicts

Movement-altering plugins (parkour, custom knockback, elytra modifications) can trigger false positives in a cheat detection system that isn't aware of them. Vulcan supports exemptions/compatibility settings for known conflicting plugin types. It's worth checking the config and Vulcan's documentation if a specific gameplay plugin causes a spike in false flags.

## The Tuning Period Isn't Optional

Running default settings in alert-only mode for at least a week or two, reviewing what gets flagged, and adjusting sensitivity per category before trusting auto-punishment is the difference between an anti-cheat that actually works and one that either misses real cheaters or frustrates legitimate players.

## False-positive review

Test movement, combat, elytra flight and common lag conditions with legitimate players before enabling automatic punishments. Review alerts and violation trends first. Coordinate exemptions for known minigame mechanics and document a staff review process for disputed detections.

## Keep tuning changes traceable

Save the original configuration before tuning checks. Record the alert, player activity and connection conditions that motivated a change. Repeat the legitimate action on a staging server after the adjustment. Changing several thresholds at once makes it difficult to know what helped or which protection you weakened. Keep a sample of normal gameplay for comparison, including the client versions and custom movement mechanics that your community actually uses.

Decide which alerts are staff information and which can lead to automatic action. Start that decision from evidence quality and your ability to review false positives, rather than the appeal of instant enforcement. Explain the reporting and appeal routes to staff. Preserve enough context for a second reviewer to understand the event. A player losing a connection during a fight can produce a different investigation from a repeatable pattern observed under stable conditions.

### Troubleshooting paths

- Frequent legitimate alerts: review compatibility and the affected mechanic.
- Alert lacks context: gather timestamps, location and surrounding events.
- Automatic action is disputed: preserve evidence before changing the configuration.

## An operational test worth running

Observe alerts under legitimate movement scenarios before enabling strict penalties. Test latency spikes, knockback, elytra, pistons and any custom movement abilities your server uses. Keep staff review and recorded evidence in the moderation process: an automated violation score is not always conclusive.
